Im thinking about putting some 10000k 35w HID light bulbs in a discovery1. Does anyone know if their will be any problems with this? And are HID lights all road legal in the uk?
 
I've seen a disco with after market
HID's, beam pattern looked ok but the glare was really bad, wouldn't recommend it. 10000k will be very blue/purple, not a usable light temperature either in my opinion. 6000k max.

I fitted some decent bulbs (Ring +60%, nothing fancy) and a relay loom at the same time as a pair of pre facelift D2 headlights and there is a huge improvement over standard. Headlights themselves were only swapped to replace cracked ones, no idea if they made any difference themselves. Light is bright, white and has a clean pattern.

The use of very bright headlamps is a danger to other road users. If you can't see properly with standard lights, perhaps you shouldn't be driving.

Not entirely fair. I had original wiring (via the switch) and two different bulbs in mine when I got it. One was dull, the other worse still. There are legal and considerate improvements to be had by upgrading the loom and bulbs to be more inkeeping with the light a modern car can produce, the op may not be aware of that.
 
Sure, I agree, have lights in good working condition but this fad of upgrading to super bright bulbs is, in my opinion dangerous and selfish. The bulbs don't last long either so you end up with one bulb out until it's replaced. So how is that better? I know I'm sounding like a grumpy old fart but these cars with super bright lights hack me off. It's like a ****ing competition, 'I want bright lights than him'

Thankyou for your quick replies. The only reason I was considering these bulbs is because I visited a friend in aus who had these ones in his land cruiser and they're very good for using off road and hunting etc. I was thinking similar uses in the uk for my D1 not to look 'cool' but just to help with the longer distance, the led's I've seen don't seem to reach as far in the distance. Do you think the relay loom was worth it, and helped a lot with the brightness? (Nice discovery by the way @AdamD1 !)

Yes, made a massive difference. Definitely recommend it. Full beam is pretty decent too, and with the spots I can't see any occasion that I'd ever need anything brighter.
 
There are as far as I know a couple of problems, or rather problem areas with the headlights, especially on the D1 and pre-facelift D2.
The length of the wiring to and from the various fuseboards and the switch stalk means that when a heavy current is being drawn, there is a voltage drop on the wiring which can cause
a) the voltage at the bulb to be below that which is required resulting in a "less than bright light" and
b) the heating effect on the wires could cause oxydisation and eventually failures in the wiring, or in the worst case, the loom catching fire.
There is also the problem which can effect the switch contacts; heating due to large currents can cause the contacts to become intermittent and ultimately fail.
By using relays, the actual switching of the lights can be done closer to both the battery and the bulbs, reducing the voltage drop across the wiring, heavier gauge wire can be utilised reducing the problem even more and by switching just relay coils with the switch stalk, the problems which could occur there are mitigated also.

Once the headlight circuits have been re-wired, you could then try using either "Osram Nightbreakers +130%" or "Phillips X-treme +120%" bulbs. I'm sure that you'll be both surprised and pleased with the results.
 
I've plenty of experience with basic 12v electrics between some silly car stereos in my yoof and rewiring a couple of boats but I was feeling lazy to be honest and took the quick option. I've been working through a long to do list as I'm sure most are on here!
 
Had the older versions in the past, they are properly impressive. I just needed to get to the free delivery order value so I got the +60 bulbs. Decent value at £8 and more than good enough.

10,000K is too noticeably blue to be standard bulbs.

HID conversations in non HID light units are an instant MOT fail in the UK. You can also pick up 3 points and a £60 fine, if you get a tug by a particularly officious traffic officer. I know of a couple of cases down this way, where vehicle defect notices were placed on the vehicle too.

Far better to use standard, but higher output bulbs as said. Also a high current harness will make a sizeable difference too. Just a 1 Volt drop at the bulb will reduce light output by 10%. So you need to get as many of those precious Volts at the bulb as possible. ;)
