As a newbie, I just thought I'd introduce myself. My last car was an Xtrail 2.2Di, which was an excellent car : extremely reliable and with OME shocks she cornered like she was on rails with excellent acceleration. Did some green laning in her for a few years - got stuck once in very rutted deep mud and was pulled out by a Disco II who looked like she was in her element!

The family is growing so I found that I needed a seven seater but I wanted something that could tow over soft ground (a boat) and could greenlane too. I also had some touring in mind. The Disco immediately came to my thoughts and the II was within price range. I got a smart standard low milage example with FSH by Landrover last month. A friend (and fellow Landy owner) said I'd not got a car but a hobby and I am beginning to see what he meant as the oil seals have already blown on the transfer box after only 1,500 miles and seals of course arent covered by warranty. I also miss the accelleration and handling of the Xtrail - but despite that there is something about a car that is robust enough to go most places but still double up as a respectable family vehicle, its got some character too. The kids absolutely love the jump seats and the car generally. I'm planning to lift her by 2" (retaining the Air suspension) to get some 265/75/16's on her to go greenlaning (standard road tyres on at the mo) and to see if I can enhance engine performance with a chip and larger intercooler.

This forum has already provided loads of information on the suspension system and I'm finding it and excellent source of landy knowledge. Big hand to all those who are sharing their knowledge and experience.
Ian

Many thanks - I know the disco was designed for terrain like green lanes and may not need lifting to do it, but I would need new tyres before laning. Having got stuck in rutts in the xtrail I value clearance. I thought I may as well lift her before buying the tyres. The disco suspension is reasonably accessible, parts are not expensive and it seems fairly straightforward for DIY upgrade, though I'm sure there will be some swearing along the way:)
