Hi to all ...
Just bought a 300TDI Discovery 1996 after a good few years without a Land Rover .... I guess I miss
all that fun I used to have with my old Range Rovers and others way back in the distant past ...
Well she ran fine for about a month and then started to overheat ... So I removed the radiator with the intention of doing a flush and pressure test .... I noticed there was no oil in the cooler when I removed the rad so I think the oil pump is not working 100%
I would appreciate any input re oil pump testing or removal ... and head and head gasket removal ...
Thanks for any feedback ....
I am trying to download an online maual from Rave link but it does not want to run on my computer? Any ideas? thanks

Hi David,

As you already have done an intro , lets ask a moderator to move this one to the Disco section.

What issues are you having with rave? you are not using a Mac are you?

Cheers

Hi Nielly ..
I have downloaded the rave 609 mb from your link onto my computer ... no not a mac .... I can't get it to run ...all I can get it to do is it keeps asking for a disc?
Thank you for your help ...I must be doing something wrong ???

I have heard of this before, but never had the issue myself so do not know how to get around it.

Not sure if it is to do with adobe acrobat......or something else.
I just downloaded and saved to my desktop in a folder , click on the rave folder I need and then click on the first green oval rave Icon.

Cheers

The file download is usually an .iso file which in some cases will ask for a blank CD so that it can be unpacked as it's being written to the disc. The .iso files are really designed and intended to be unpacked to a CD or DVD.
I have heard of some users employing a "virtual disk" to unpack the .iso file to.
I went down the CD route so that I have a permanent back-up of each RAVE and once on a CD, all you need to do is copy the unpacked files back to your computer or multiple computers without having to download every time.
It doesn't usually bother about what version or even whether you have a .pdf reader already installed, RAVE is packed with it's own version of Acrobat 4 and trying to use a different version is, frankly not worth the hassle.

Doubt its rad blocked, normal cause of 300 overheating is P-gasket weeping letting coolant get low engine overheats and screws the head gasket up, might not be immediately apparent, sometimes also blows the header tank apart, engine is tough so new head gasket and P-gasket and away you go.

Thanks for your reply ....yes header tank has a split in it .... where will I find the ''p gasket''
Thanks

It could also be that your expansion tank just split.
Look for coolant leak down the side / front RH corner of the engine ( as you look at it from the front of the vehicle). As this is normally visible if the P gasket has gone.

Ref the rave download, not sure why, I download , when the box at the bottom of the screen shows download complete ,
Click on the download box and select show in folder.
Select the file in the download folder and copy paste to a new folder on my desktop.
Double click on this rave file ,
Double click on the folder now showing,
Scroll down to the 1st green oval RAVE icon,
Double click, select ACCEPT,
Double click on the picture,
Select the vehicle you require. At least that works for me using Windows 10.

Cheers

P-gasket is cheap, make sure you get the metal type, doubt you can get the old paper style anymore but you never know, it goes between the water pump housing and the engine block.
What happens is the P-gakste leaks slowly so slowly the coolant evaporates on the hot engine block so leaves little evidence and its also hard to see as its behind the alternator, then you know the rest.
Just remember to check coolant weekly and before any long trip, some people have made up coolant level alarms.

Tbh rave aint worth a toss as its all on the internet somewhere.

what oil cooler is this a transmission cooler or engine oil cooler ?
if its a engine oil issue this can be a thermostat issue just like the TD5 it wont send oil to the cooler or spinner unless oil reaches a curtain temp

Hi ... I removed the head and can see the head gasket is caput .... I had the head pressure tested and it was ok ... but when they skimmed it they took off 0.5mm .... I bought a metal three hole head gasket as I am informed this will not compress as much as a fibre composit head gasket .... Having removed this amount of metal will I face any other problems re fitting the head? There is a very small step down into the valves about 1.00mm is this enough? Thanks for your help cheers
