My name is Alex and I live in the Chester area and thank god I have discovered you guys and this excellent site.
Basically I have owned a 98 Discovery TDI for the last two years hassle free. It only had 2 previous owners and 53,000 on the clock, so at £2,000 I couldn't resist. The only things I have replaced are the radiator and back disc's and pads. I have just started to have problems with a loud sqeeking which then turns into a banging noise which seems to be coming from the back right wheel area, the sound is very like an exhaust dragging on the ground and today this resulted in the back right wheel locking up and us skidding down the lane for a good 50 meters with no control, after pulling myself back together and a lot of head scratching and deep breathing, we managed to limp home. ( thank god we weren't on the motorway)There are no leaks what so ever from that area or anywhere, and I thought I might have knocked the diff stick out of gear but that doesn't seem to be the case either, I have taken it around the block at low speed and the clunking and banging is still there, but hasn't locked up again. Before I take it in to the garage I was wondering if anyone else has had such a problem or any suggestions to what maybe causing this. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to any replies from you guys. Alex.
