Hello and welcome. The 1.8 petrol engines are known for head gasket issues. I would go for a TD4 (BMW engine) if I was looking for a freelander.

I'd second the above - the TD4 is more reliable - but if your mileage would be low, and the rest of the car is good, or the HG has been done and the price is right - it might be a good buy - plenty of info in the freelander section..... or ask the questions in there - might get seen by the folk knowledgeable on the freelander....
