Hi , I’ve finally decided to buy a defender 90. Have looked at a few 1997-2000 models. I’d appreciate some buying advice/ Reliability issues/ price guide and rough costs for modernisation - which I accept are budget dependant. I’d like to improve the handling and make the interior more comfortable and if possible put forward facing fold up rear seats in as per the newer models. Any advice would be welcome! Cheers

Exactly what are you thinking in terms of modernisation? Handling? At the end of the day it's a 2 tonne brick with tall tyres not a lotus elise.
Check for rust and rot on chassis and bulkhead and it's not a ringer

Welcome.

Have a good search on your points - you'll find tonnes of info and its all been covered before.

Take note of the engine offerings and again; search them here.

Take a lot of consideration to whether you actually need/want a defender. If you haven't lived with one you may be in for a shock. You can hire utility spec ones through SHB or similar which would give you a taste. If your hobbies/work or reasons for wanting a defender could be done in a disco, you may be happier with that and It won't cost you anywhere near as much to buy. A disco is on rubber body mounts whereas a defender isn't. That makes vibration etc far more apparent.
