Start with the basics, full service and if you tell us what engine it has we might have an idea or two ... :)

It's had the full works every oil there is and the filters not so long ago. It's the 2.5 na diesel ex mod. When reved sitting still half way through the Rev range it sounds like a misfire on a petrol when it runs on 3 cylinders for a split second also it's quite tappy top end my dad said it mite be the valves not opening properly?? Who knows but it has good and bad days very frustrating

Service should include checking the valve clearances, also have a good listen, (yeah I know it's tricky), with a short tube as a stethoscope thingy, for any whistles and air leaks from manifolds and hoses ... any deposits in the rocker cover cap?
It has to be set right, to run right ...

I have a feeler gauge coming so I can do the sort the tappets out. I'm new to all this so learning from all you guys is great I've always wanted a landy since I was a kid

Buy the best quality tools you can afford ... and download RAVE, the electronic workshop book of where it goes and what it does ...
There may be someone local to you who will walk you through the basics if you're new to spannering ...

The spannering I'm not to bad with just learning the land rover really cheers for the advice :)

The easy way is to read up on other peoples problems with similar vehicles, then go and look at your own ...

If you become familiar with your when something is amiss it's easier to find .... and it is possible you have a partial fuel starvation issue ....

Also another thing when I fill up with fuel I take off the cap and the tank pops. Have seen few posts on here about some diaphragm being split.?

Would it make any difference to the running of it.?
Definitely, you're basically creating a vacuum inside the fuel tank making it harder for the fuel pump to suck the fuel out which will give symptoms of fuel starvation. When the tank isn't full leave the cap off and drive it around the block, but it sounds like you need a new cap anyway
