Disco 2 HELP!!

On our way back from newcastle to sussex, stopped in traffic and heard a loud rattling with louder exhaust note at ldle, goes when revs pick up. Stopped at leeds, sounds like itc coming from the engine around the manifold area. Anyone any ideas? We have a long way to get home!!

Well firstly the M1 near Leeds is screwed so where are you...? Services?

Does it run OK and it's just the noise? exhaust note changed? Any warning lights?

At a retail park in leeds. Not sure where yet, runs fine but rattles like hell at idle. No lights. Sounded like a loose exhaust joint but did sound like a bit deeper exhaust note up in newcastle.

I suspect that you have a disintegrating baffle inside the exhaust someone. Not too up on D2's but I'd start shaking the pipe when it's cold enough or if you have a rag and see if you can find the bit that makes a noise.

http://www.4xfortyone.co.uk/ is in Wakefield and close enough by that you could drop past and ask them if they can have a quick look although they can be very busy. White Rose retail by any chance? south end of leeds?

Sounds more like manifold area. Colton retail park near M1 junction.

OK you are just past the closure then so that wont worry you.

Manifold rattle is a bit more worrisome theres turbo's and all manner of stuff up there that can go wrong.. I suspect it's start looking for things that are broken and when it's cooled strip bits off and poke... about the best I can suggest. I'm still a couple of hours away unless you fancy waiting but I've not played with TD5 very much. Indeed is it a diesel or petrol?

Cool. I was just wondering if it could be a blowing manifold gasket I know they can rattle sometimes as the gas goes past. About all I can think of...

Could a failing dual mass flywheel cause his rattle?

Have BIG hammer ,welder ,ramps , & pit down at Dads if needed ! LOL

I got nowt on this evening if you need another chimp to hold tools give me a shout lol.

Not got spare flywheel sadly. Lets hope you are not splitting a box off.

After some investigation with the help of @Magicgrotto it looks like the circular plate that the flex plate bolts to on the gearbox is cracked. I'm going to have to drive it home on a wing and a prayer....

Thanks for the offer @chris-the-gerbil But Sadly there is nowt we could do ! Other than take box out & then get the bits to fix it IF we could find some one locale that had them In stock
Not that WE had any probs with them staying over , they could have slept in the caravan ! BUT a young lady is off to CORNWALL 2morrow on her & the kids jollys So they have to get home !

Things like this help keep my faith in human nature hanging on a bit longer, especially with all the cr@p going on around the world today.

Oooer... that flex plate... Thats not easily fixable is it save a swap. Might have got one from Paddocks but I bet thats not a stock item. Fingers crossed that he makes it!

We made it!! Just...
Gradually got worse and now sounds like an oil drum full of spanners rolling down a hill. But... 270 miles after the rattle first appeared... we're home!
