Hi all.

Yesterday we ran the car about 20 Miles. All good, running nice. On return journey after car sitting all day, we broke down after it starting coughing, spluttering and some backfires thrown into the mix.
Plenty of fuel, but noticed the little fine vacuum hose onto back of distributor was hanging off.
Pushed it back on and it ran the same. Missing, popping and farting. Won’t run long after starting.
I noticed that the brass nozzle on the vacuum was fractured, so I’ve bodged it together but still runs as bad.
Any advice?

Check the ignition breaker points gap in the distributor, should be about .015" , if points are burned and ratty, condenser could be faulty/breaking down. Clean/re-gap points.
If those are ok ignition coil could be sick, test by "flicking points" with ignition switch on and coil lead held about 1/4 " from engine metal, a good coil will throw a bright blue spark across that gap. Check wiring battery to pos (+) side of coil for full 12 volts, check wire to neg (-) side of coil back to distributor.
Vacuum advance will only effect higher speed running and fuel economy, but check inside the distributor the security of manual and vacuum advance mechanisms, they can fall apart after lots of years of use, causing bad starting/running issues.
