hi all i have a 06 td4 with 86000 on the clock just had it 3 months it sounds like its missing and the temp is rising and falling. Were dose the needle sit on the temp gage as mine moves all the time from were the water line starts to straight up and then falls back is this normal or is it overheating temp rising, the thermostat opening. also the missing sound could this be an injector prob or a head prob? thanks

Might be a faulty temp sensor or thermostat. Do the simple thing first check the coolant is okay and when it was last serviced. Next the needle should climb to the middle and stay there for normal. Missing for an 86000 miles should be queried i would have a diagnostic tool check this first.

OP: when you say "rising and falling", do the needle positions correspond to how hard the engine is working? My td4 only reached the vertical position when climbing steep hills and dropped off to about 10 o'clock on the downhill and flat. Change of thermostat solved the issue and gave warm feet!

Could be a faulty stat or sensor.
I would be tempted to plan on replacing both. If it were me, which ever one I chose to replace first it is always the other one.
Sods law and all that

yes devonguy that,s whats it is doing any idea on the missing sound i was thinking an injector or at worse the head
It has to go in for MOT so will get them to look at it and will order a thermostat and temp sensor (is that the air temp sensor )

It'll likely be the thermostat;) They are a known failure point on the TD4.
The missing could be poor fuel quality or an injector playing up or fouled. Only use decent quality fuel and definitely no supermarket stuff. It's also worth using a decent fuel additive to clean the injectors. I now use Comma Diesel Magic once a month after my TD4 suddenly developed a misfire a few months back. I also switched to Shell V Power and she's been running smooth as silk ever since.
