help on fuel pleae

Hi,

have searched this one out but still need help......


my 1976 SIII 4cyl 2286cc engine...does it use leaded fuel or unleaded, have emailed the po but no joy as to what it takes....can i tell by the engine number?? (any links??) :(
 
The previous owner may be able to tell whether they or an owner before them fitted an unleaded head. I don't know of any definable markings on the exterior to give an indication.

I suspect although I may be wrong that if it had been fitted with an unleaded head that the reciept would surely been in with the bills / history. The only way I can suggest of checking is to strobe it and see what the timing position is. There are two different positions for TDC if my memory is correct, depending on the octane ratings. One is for leaded and the other for unleaded. This may help.

:D or i could take it to a land rover dealer....might cost but....

if it is leaded do i / can i buy anything to add to unleaded??

But go to a reputable motor factors, not a high street type, one that deals with trade and retail, and tell em ull be needing loads (and parts) They should let you apply for a trade acount and get it all cheap.
 
I ran my 2 1/4 series III on unleaded for years and had not a jot of problem. As long as you aren't routinely blasting it down the motorway attempting to get 70mph out of it the valve seats will last. The lead compounds will had impregnated the surface of the valve seats and this will last a long time anyway.
