Hi all, I have a freelander td4 10 reg (54000 miles) and I've noticed oil dripping from under the front end around the middle under the engine. I've had a look, no sign of dirty engine but my oil has gone incredibly low. I have NO clue about cars and I'm just not sure what it might be. Any ideas? I'd appreciate any help before I go spend ££££
Engine appears to be running fine, no dodgy smoke, no nasty noises. I did notice a burning plastic/rubber/ nasty smell last week, only once.

hi

welcome to the asylum

if i may say i wouldn't use it until the oil leak has been resolved ,

can u post up some pics please of the oil leak

also pop over into the freelander section

@Hippo is ur man regarding these , should be along soon to help

I have requested it gets moved to the safety of the freelander section.

Which oil level is low? I assume engine?

Make sure the crankcase breather filter has been changed recently - that's cheap and should be done anyway - on my car there was engine oil oozing out of both ends when I got it and mucking up the driveway - changed the filter and after a while it's virtually dry and no longer drips.

Hi Jacqueline
I would also go for the PCV filter it could be blocked and the oil will come out of the dip stick, do you known if it as been changed since you had the car ? how long have you had the car, when was it last serviced ? I had to change one recently and it looked like it had never been change since it was new, rock and twice the size it should be.

Please disregard the above I am informed that your FL is a 2010 therefore a freelander 2 2.2 should of read your post more closely

There you go always pays to read all of the post, lesson learnt, therefore Jacqueline disregard my post, and the photo's which I will now remove sorry.
Another good reason why I think it should be obligatory for members to add their year and engine under the name. Arctic

Hi hippo, sorry I didn't reply sooner. It had to go in to be fixed and it was oil leaking from the engine breather supply so resulted in £600 worth of repair. ☹️

Thankyou in any case. £600 to repair! Oil leak from engine breather. ☹️

Could be rear main oil seal or sump to engine joint

Only way to tell is to get the car on a ramp, take off the undershields and have a look
When we took off the undersheilds there was oil everywhere.
So when I bought the car in July 16 it was sold as having a fresh service!! This is now questionable and I think I may have been mislead!! Oh the joys of dealing with dodgy car salesmen

WTF! what did they do?? Replace the engine  Get a break down of what they did and post it on here please. Thats just a rip off!!
+1
I haven't worked on a FL2 but can't imagine how a blocked breather could cost £600 to fix. You could have a clutch changed for that.

For reference, a new breather filter for the FL1 is £4.99, and takes about 1/2 hour to fit.

Following all this, I've now been quoted £600 + to replace a rear main oil seal. Is this a rip off?? It's £17.50 for the part and 9 hours @ £72 an hour to fit!? (Inclusive of VAT) lol
