If resetting the trip computer and taking it for a run did not work and there is no cloud of black smoke behind you. Look for a leak, spill pipes are favourite.

I have a very slight leaking at the side of the fuel pump, same m51 unit, also had the injector return pipes were cracked and issing out. Check your fuel tank underneath, if its wet then you have corroded pipe fittings on the sender unit, top of tank! not a pleasant job....good luck.
From Bootle originally!

Cheers Mark the sender unit leaks sounds a bad job but I haven't seen any evidence of leaks on the ground by the tank it was doing 20 around town before the eas went pear shaped but it's back on the road now took it for a run today after resetting the trip computer and it's showing 15mpg now ( better than 12) !!!! Thanks for taking time out to reply take care

If you get stuck then try Ian Berkey in New Ferry, good Indy. Take the old tunnel and turn for New Ferry before the bypass,he's a few hundred yards up on the left.:)

Just follow the smell of diesel, take the cover off (between the rocker cover and the inlet manifold and you will see them linking the injectors

A good sign of leaking injector pipes is diesel on the engine sump!
What air filter are you using?
Ha Mark your talking to an ignorant p38 owner here, that's my next task to do a service on the truck need to sort the fuel consumption out if no fuel leeks would this make a big difference ?
