I would like to buy a RR with the 2.5 VM diesel,. however owner is not sure if the car have 2.4 or 2.5 VM engine. the car was build in july 1989, in this month the factory introduced the newer one.
Its a french car and there is no info in the car documents about engine size. I have just photos and the chassis number.
Im a bit lost because dont know how be sure abou the engine type.

cheers

First you say the PO 'is not sure' of the engine size, then you state 'owner insists it's a 2.5'
Forgive me if I'm missing something here.

Get the engine number then run it past these:

I've just had a look at my factory manual which covers both the 2.4 & 2.5 VMs & visually they look very similar.
I don't know if these numbers will be on the engine number plate but:
The 2.5 is Type "95 A VM type HR 4924 HI"
The 2.4 is Type "11A VM type HR 492 HI"
If you can identify the engine coolant rail the thermostat is shown on the side of it with the temp sensor on the end on the 2.4 but the stat & it's housing with the top hose connection as part of the housing are on the front end on the 2.5
2.4 sump looks to be 2 piece whilst the 2.5 is one piece.

thank you. Ill try to check again. Strange that its so difficult to tell them apart.

The VM 2.4 was replaced in 1990 by the 2.5 VM and a short time later that was replaced by the 200tdi.

All 2-300 TDIs are badged TDI on the boot.

And VM's are badged Turbo D ;)

And with yours being a july '89 it'll be the 2.4.

Well, yes of course ;)

OP will 'ave to check engine numbers ;)
back in their day we used to rebuild a lot and a lot went for the 2.5 as a replacement, quite an interesting engine to rebuild, you bolt the main bearing caps around the crank journals then slide that into the block, heads cracked often and later were chrome plated on head face iirc, they also ran high oil pressure 90 psi
