I'm in the process of changing the axles on my 1989 90 to 24 spline s-reg 300tdi disco axles. I took the original front axle off yesterday to discover that my front calipers are in very good condition possibly having been rebuilt shortly before I bought the 90. The front calipers on the disco axle are not in great condition but on closer inspection both sets of calipers appear identical, are they meant to be like this or has the previous owner put different ones on the 90's axle? If they are the same then can I fit my 90 calipers onto the disco axle instead of rebuilding the disco ones?

I need to find out fairly quickly so that i can either get a rebuild kit tomorrow or stick the 90 calipers onto the disco axle and get it fitted today :D

Thanks in advance, Harry

90 and disco axles are ver similar especially after rationalisation 93/94 ,you need to check mounting bolt size ,lr only use two different sized pistons with 90 ,disco and rr sharing the smaller one and 110 the larger ,the differences are mounting bolt holes 1/2 inch or 13mm ,split pin or solid pin pad retainers although that wouldnt effect your brake operation, after 93/94 when lr rationalised units ,parts became more similar a 300 tdi axle is the same for disco or 90,so as long as mounting bolts are the rigth size they will be perfectly okay

Thanks very much for the advice, I have new bolts that are the correct ones for the discovery axle/calliper and IIRC look the same as the ones that came off the 90's original axle too. I will test fit the 90 callipers onto the disco axle tomorrow and if the bolts all fit properly then I shall go ahead with that combination.
Thanks again, Harry :D

If you are fitting a Disco REAR axle in place of the 90 drum brake axle, make sure you have your seat belt on nice and tight before you stomp on the brake pedal!

What a difference!
