Hi there. Have a 2006 Freelander Td4 which has persistent juddering through the gearstick, clutch pedal and when going uphill the whole vehicle. It has been in and out of the garage (not a LR dealership) and so far the following has been done:-

Front drive shafts replaced
rear engine mount replaced
front prop shaft replaced
prop shaft bushes replaced
clutch checked and bled

The garage originally referred it to the LR dealership for diagnostics who suggested replacing the drive shafts which was done but has made no difference whatsoever. The garage don't know what else to do and I'm at the end of my tether. Someone else has suggested a dual mass flywheel problem?
I am a female who doesn't know too much about cars (although since owning this vehicle I've learned a lot !!) so please use small words if replying.... any ideas would be gratefully recieved and passed onto the garage

I don't want to sound like I'm asking dumb questions for the fun of it but...
Are you sure your not in too high a gear when going uphill?
Do you still get plenty of 'umph' if you put your foot down despite the shuddering, and does it die out (the vibration) if you either level out, or increase speed and revs in the same gear?

yes I'm in the right gear, it happens when my hubbie drives it too so it's not just a woman driver thing lol.
power doesn't really die off, doesn't stop if you increase the revs, eases off when you ease off the gas but starts straight away when back on the gas

My husbands answer to this is - gear stick doesn't wobble in first, mainly in 2nd and 3rd eases off when revs increase, to a vibration. vibration in other gears

Has the rear diff front bush been checked , the drivers side is the one that usually goes , not expensive(£25) and not too difficult to fit

Only other thing I can think off is a damaged IRD, possibly from a VCU that was well past it's lifespan?
Hopefully someone on here has experienced that to comment whether the symptoms sound the same?

So heres the deal....get your hubby to drive it whilst you find a use for that vibrating lever. It will change your perception of whether this is a problem or a blessing!

Sorry - I'll get my coat:p

I had a prob with a tranny (van) once, the engine would shake every so often only when pulling causing the hole vehicle to shake,
the prob was a faulty injector pump

A dual mass would be felt as a major vibration through the clutch pedal and the clutch operation being erratic.

Does it increase with speed and is it still there when coasting with your foot on the clutch? Have you had the tyres checked incase they are out of shape, is a common fault, also check them for uneven wear as this can point out a fault. Wheel bearings or diff bearings could also be at fault and lead to avibration although a decent garage should spot that. VCU is a prime suspect but a LR dealership should know that.

A faulty injector could cause a vibration, modern PD engines use very high pressures And the spray patterns matter, alot of engines knacker out injectors now days although at 36k i wouldnt expect it.

Handed it back to garage today under the agreement they don't try and give it back til it's fixed. Luckily I got a courtesy car even if it is an old mans car and they are doing any work at cost to themselves as they made a big cock up with the warranty (it didn't exist despite being told I got 12 months). If it ever gets sorted I will post the results.

Well I've just got it back from garage after 2 weeks and after a tootle round the town it seems to be ok but am reserving judgement til I can take it for a longer drive tomorrow somewhere with hills
After referring it back to the LR dealership they were adamant it was still a problem with the driveshafts even tho they've been replaced.. So the new driveshafts have been replaced with new driveshafts and then he started to get technical and I zoned out.....
Fingers crossed.............:car:

try not to apear that you dont know wot they are talking about, get them to explain or show you wot has been done.
if they have put on new drive shalfs whitch were new ,ask why,
take old ones back if faulty,
if they try tech bull **** .stop them and get it in laymans terms,
after all you are paying the bill

hope its sorted now for you

Refer back to #16 - I wasn't paying, and they did have me look under the vehicle and showed me the shiny new driveshafts they'd put on and the shiny new ones they'd took off and told me they were sending them back to where they got them as they were obviously faulty. So after a long drive about today ( no mean feat on a island this size) seems to all be ok again.

Chuckling to myself now as I was gonna write 'they had me on the floor to look at the shiny new shafts' then I realised how that read...... Snigger

Thank you to all who made a suggestion with regards to helping and those who just wrote smut, you made me laugh:D
