Hi, Land Rover Newbie here:

Anyway, let me introduce myself. Middle-aged (boo hoo) Software Engineer who really fancies a traditional SWB diesel (Defender/Series II/IIA/III and variants). I'm not into Range Rover, Discovery, Freelander or domestic variants, but would like to learn about getting my first Land Rover.

Worked for a bit (very short stint doing admin work) in my early engineering days at Solihull plant, but never really got into them there and was always driving Eurobangers in my 20s!!!!!

So. I'd like something that works and is reliable to start with and will allow me to take stuff to and from the tip, take the dog to the park etc, but that I can eventually work on and restore/or at least maintain. Because I'd use this more about town, I'd like to investigate PAS models. So I have a few questions to start with:

1) Where is the best place to start learning about 'Rovers?
2) Are diesels gas guzzlers?
3) Can PAS units be retrofitted to really old vintage models?
4) Are old vintages still serviceable and would I be better off with a 1990s model or something in the 2000s?
5) What's insurance and Tax like on these things?

Please bare with me and be gentle on my ignorance, but I've grown to love the look of these things and would really like to get to know them - warts n all.

But I'm also realistic and will no doubt start to realise their pitfalls and shortcomings.

And if anyone knows of any going anywhere, then I'll be grateful for any referrals, or at least some help on starting.

In other words: I NEED A MENTOR

Thanks for listening (reading)

Ian
