Hi all,

I’ve just become the proud owner of a 1970 Series 2a. She’s in reasonable condition but I’ve already discovered a few things that need further investigation…….

I have a feeling I will be on here seeking help quite a bit!

No dashboard illumination.
Quite a bit of play in steering wheel and car wandering requiring along of correction.
Screen washer jet not working.

There should be play in the steering box, you can adjust it out, but then the box will fail. Meant to be like that for off road driving.
Jets blocked or motor packed up for washers.
Dash lights could be bulbs gone.

Welcome to LZ. :)

Future tech queries in the Series section please.

According to the DVLA register actions dates and talking to Land Rover it’s a 2a!

Have a good look at some of the parts underneath, and compare with pics on the net to see whats what, handbrake linkage is one thing.
The bulkhead is s3, that alone does not make it a s3 but some further investigation is always worth while.

Can you engage first gear from a standstill without the gears crunching?
Hole in passenger wing for heater intake?
Where is the hot/cold heater lever?
Rear tub proper rivets or pop rivets holding it together?
Bulkhead outriggers got any angled bits welded to them and the chassis, in a sort of gusset fashion?

Dont forget land rovers are like lego, add in 40 odd years of repair/mods/upgrades and very little could be original.

See if you can find a s3 workshop manual, s2 manual gives you id number range for parts ie axles/

I’ll share the front part of the plate with you - as I’m sure you’re aware Series 3 start with a 9 and started in October 71, also note the kinked gear lever.

I’m note sure of the full history of it but I spoke with Alex Lindsay who has looked after the car for quite along time has vouched for it and said it’s a good example.

Dont forget pre 300tdi, all land series/90/110/defender had the in cab/or under bonnet id plate riveted or screwed on, only way to be 100 percent it is what it says it is, is to check the chassis number on the dumb iron, but as most will have been replaced by now!
In the eyes of the law the chsssis is the car, literally the rest of it does not matter for id purposes.

Washers might also be gunge in the tank, mixing brands can cause this and the filter blocks in the tank outlet ...

A picture of the door hinges should cure the argument discussion ...

Strange as I joined on here to meet fellow enthusiasts and learn a bit more about the cars, yet somehow I already feel like I’m not welcome by some.

The car was registered in Feb 1970, over 18months before S3’s were released. It’s obviously had a lot of work done to it to keep it on the road and I’m guessing many parts were swapped out/upgraded in its 51.5years of existence. What can I say……

Ok, you have asked a technical question on the 'Intro' board ... not a big boo boo, but frowned on ...

The difference between Series 2, 2a and 3 is well discussed on here ...

A brief read of the relevant section will help ...

And you'll fit in fine, just don't take some comments to heart too much ...

Don't be so thin skinned.
Most of us have run Series for years, and if you can't take a bit of ribbing at first, you are not going to be able to cope with the ups and downs of Series ownership.
It is important to be realistic, there is nothing wrong with a Series, but it is really a 1940s car, and motoring was different then.
You can't expect the same levels of handling, comfort, and things working at the same time as you can with a modern car.

New people are always welcome, I think you will find people on here are curious what you actually have, not what the paperwork says, ignore the paperwork look at the hard facts/evidence.

Have you checked any of the points I made in a previous post? answer them even if only to yourself and you may have your answer.

It has the s3 hinges, like I said earlier not an issue as mods normal, could be acc repaired etc etc.
Also, the very last Series 2a incorporated a lot of features of S3, so that the company could evaluate them, and get customer feedback, before the new model was launched.

I am not sure if any of those very late 2as had the later style hinges, they certainly had headlights on the wings, and the plastic grilles.

One of many things I may have known once, but have forgotten.
