We had a TD4 a couple off years ago, and due to finances had to get rid, i have seen a Freelander for sale 98 model Diesel not TD4 with some probs and would like an idea whether it would be a good purchase.

1 - Noisy front diff any ideas cost and part
2- window regulator front o/s and rear door (I know there a problem and poss easy fix)
3 - Brakes pads and discs i presume not a problem,

These are the problems listed

the L-series is a good engine.
is the ird noisy or could it be coming from somewhere else? may just need some new oil.
If the ird is knackered or on its way out then I'd only buy it if its around £200.
Check the vcu aswell and look at the rear tyres for a 'saw-toothed' wear pattern - which is bad news.

Welcome. Agree with what Howardo says, he's the resident L-series expert. Their good reliable lumps but I'd be very wary of this one because of the diff noise unless it's dead cheap.

Price advertised is £600, everything else seems to check ok, son says should pay no more than £300, opinions please

At the minimum, price up a replacement ird to get it running in basic mondo mode & allow an extra couple of hundred for other faults, then you'll know whether it's worth it. Remember £1500 will buy you a good one.

Hi chromiumuk, that was what i was going to do, but keep hearing stories of having to replace vcu if over 75k as the oil gets too thick priced that at about £250, so i'm thinking if i spend 600 ish on the parts should have half decent vehicle, son is a mechanic and i can do bits myself, Autotrader prices seem to about 1600-1800 ish thanks for the advice

Any views on freelanderspecialist.com for parts or a preferred parts supplier, britparts seem to get a bit of stick on here
