I have a small problem on my landy, now before i take it all apart next weekend i though i would ask here for some advice.

When the car in parked and i turn on the heater nothing happens. i took off the top vent and can see that the fan is not working (it doesn't spin)

i went in it to my local halfords today and on the way i tryed again and i managed to get hot air but only when the landy was moving,

So i know sumit is wrong with the fan, is there a common problem with them?

i will be checking the earth and the basics, i was just hoping for a few pointers.

Its a 1985 90 (before it was called a defender) Its hasn't got air con (before you ask) and its green (like that helps)

thanks

tom

Yea, you will get air just with the air that is forced through the system. Fan motor could be gone, wire could be loose, fuse could be gone, switch could be knackered.

It is not uncommon for the motor to be siezed however it can quite often be freed just by removing the intake duct, reaching in to the heater-box and turning the motor by hand. If this doesn't work then it isn't a major disaster as new motors are available and are easily fitted (don't bother with secondhand units as they take just as much work to fit and who is to say it isn't going to fail on you in the future?). Expect to pay around £65 for a non genuine unit and approx twice that for a genuine one.

When I was buying a new new motor I checked the genuine item against a pattern one (the dealer had both on the shelf) and they were identical items made by the same firm so needless to say I went for the cheaper item.

Just on the topic, and a good measure to keep these heaters working well spray some silicon spray into them every now and again, lubricates it all a bit and keeps the matrix good.
