I have the very basic heater control - non digital. The bulb blew a while back and I managed to find out how to access it. I couldn't pull the bulb out and ended up bu breaking it. It appeared to be housed in a small black plastic holder. I pushed this and it went back towards the bulkhead and dropped out of sight. Is it simply a case of a new holder and bulb? My concern is how the holder is to be wired in. Does anyone have part numbers for these?

The holder and the bulb are one part they are not supposed to be separated, depends what colour was yours, orange = STC1877, green = STC1878

Just out of interest how much of a colossal PITA was it to get to the bulb? This is a job I've been putting off and off and off!
That's great - I assume it is plug and play. Only concern I have is that I thought the bulb was clear. Is this possible? Colour of light is green and I guess it could be this. In terms of PITA this was easy - once I figured it out. I need to do it again in order to explain. Once I do it, I will put some notes up.
I have just taken the facia off and went to put the bulb in. However, the above part number is not for this heater. The base is circular. I have taken a picture (which I will try to upload) of the aperture - note it is rectangular. I have also taken a photo of the control itself. Can anyone please advise? I cannot see how the power gets to the bulb either.

In terms of complexity, this was really simple to do. Pull off the 3 circular control units that are on the heaters and direction of air flow. Once the heater units are off, there are 2 screws. Unscrew these. Remove the plastic mounted onto the heater speed lever and pull the fascia off.

The discrimination you give is identical to what is required to access a heater control bulb in a 300series D1 including the aperture below the centre dial. For the D1 that bulb is a small capless 1.2watt and its clear, the heater control surrounds give the background colour blue, red and of course green.
As for uploading a picture file just click on the green "upload a file" button, if your photos are on an iPad then you'll have use Safari to access them, but straightforward with a PC.

I've never had to go there, but my Haynes shows the bulb being removed from that aperture, the bulb tis a smaller version of the T10 bulb as used in the indicator repeaters and side lights therefore are slotted in the holder not just pushed in.
To get behind and access to the bulb holder there's a few other screws that u can see to remove maybe six or so and that enables the rest of the plastic in that area to come away... according to Haynes

hmm, I'll give that a go this morning then thanks. The Haynes has you taking out the radio, dismantling half the dash and disconnecting the heater control cables. If it's easier to do than that I'll be chuffed to bits!

Presumably I pull the bulb and leave the holder well alone?
On a separate note, thinking about it I may well end up taking the entire unit out anyway. The light intermittently works - usually if I switch the fan to full - which suggests to me a poor connection on the power feed to the back of that bulb.

Don't try and use pointed nose pliers they won't grip and or break the glass, use a piece of small plastic tubing that fits tightly over the bulb and pull, if it's the original bulb they seem to be tougher to remove, well it been there a long time.
Capless bulbs are notorious for their intermittent connection, even a brand new bulbs so u install the new bulb in the holder and it doesn't work due to the wire at the base misshaped, pull the bulb out readjust the wires slightly and try again and if you lucky the bulb illuminates

Got the bulb out. It's a clear white capless jobbie. There's no markings on it, any ideas what rating I should get? The local Landy place wasn't helpful in the least.

12v 1.2w capless 286 (T5) is the type number, LR part no. RTC3635

Well that was easy. Can't believe I didn't do it years ago. The Haynes would have you stripping out half the dash!
Well done Balbas. I'm glad you managed to get the bulb out. I couldn't manage to upload my picture, which was very similar. Issue I had was that I broke the bulb and pushed the holder back and it is now no longer present. I am hoping that I can simply push another holder in from the front. Can anyone advise on this? If it is possible, what is the part number for the holder?

Take the remaining part of the heater control facia off and retrieve the existing bulb holder which is hopefully attached to its wiring, you will have to do that if the bulb holder was found to be faulty anyway.
The bulb holder isn't listed in the LR parts book as a replacement part, as far as I can see, but it maybe available from automotive electrical parts suppliers.
