Disco 2 Heated Front Windscreen

Hi all,

I’m having some problems with my disco 2 heated front windscreen, this appears to be working only on the left hand side and with the wonderful weather we are having at the moment it would be nice to get this working properly again since it’s a real time saver on icy mornings. I’ve had the multimeter out today and determined that the fuses for the screen are fine and I have also had the connectors unplugged and tested them with the heated screen button activated and I get between 14-14.8V on both sides. I’m making the assumption that this means the relays are working correctly too. I have additionally checked continuity between the two pins for the windscreen on both connectors and this is fine on both sides so I can’t work out why it isn’t working. Is there something I am missing or can you think of anything else I should try in order to diagnose this?

I can't help, but I'm watching this with interest. Out of interest where are the connectors and which relays did you check?

The high current side of the heated front screen is pretty simple, as you can see from the attached diagram.
The circuit is triggered by the relay which feeds power via the two fuses, one for each half of the screen. The black wires are ground.
if you've verified that +12 volts are available at the connectors at the base of the screen then there's very little else to go wrong. Check also that each joint in the system is clean and able to carry the current.
If all that is OK, then a continuity check of the actual screen might show open circuit but even if it doesn't, there might only be one or two of the filaments remaining intact.
The filament wires of the screen heaters are very fine and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the screen itself has gone faulty, in which case the only thing to be done is replacement.
Now I'm not the type to tell the insurance company that as I was driving along the M whatever number a rock was thrown up by a truck and it went through the screen .... after all, that's not honest!

i had to have a new screen in my P38 because the heater elements had gone.
And now my D2 screen only has about two thirds of it working.
Same with my wifes C Max, so screen failures quite normal after a few years.

My screen stopped working also. Seems to be the mesh just gives up with age. Plenty of power to the screen.
Priced replacement with Autoglass at £550. fitted. Stays under a carport so at that money will just use de-icer when screen freezes up when parked elsewhere.

insurance claim?

Strange coincidence. The Shaguar's screen has also packed in on the passenger side and about a third working on the driver's side, a fellow owner's has also gone AWOL . AutoGlass quoted £430 inclusive to to replace.

Must be something to do with the weather.

Don't you have Pilkington dealer there? i replaced mine at a local Pikington dealer and cost me the equivalent of around £200 fitted with upper seal included and 2 year warranty

Find a local independent windscreen company.
Mine was less than £200 on the P38, Not bothering on my D2 yet - other jobs taking a priority

This is what happens to mine, guess after so long they just wear out, so I only had a couple strips in the wonderful weather this morning. Autoglass quoted me 600 odd so rung a local company, Solo Windscreens Limited (South Wales) and having it replaced tomorrow for about £170+VAT, and t replacing the A pillar I snapped, oops. and no I wasn't driving, thats where I parked

Thanks for the responses everyone, much appreciated. Sounds like the issue could be the screen after all then since everything else checks out. I may be going down the route of pricing a replacement screen but for now it’s manageable as is, just got to get up a bit earlier!!!

Also Balbas - I checked the voltages at the connectors which I believe are the last connection before the screen itself, these are under the bonnet right at the back and there should be one on each side of the car. I haven’t checked anything specific with the relays but I have made the assumption that because I get 14V+ at the connectors when I turn on the heated screen on, the relay must be kicking in correctly. I have attached a photo (not great as it was dark at the time) but this shows the connector you are looking for.

That’s the final connection to the screen so I’d imagine if there’s power there it’s just a worn out screen. Speaking of those wires I took mine to have It replaced, but when they took the new screen out the box the wires that are soldered and glued to the screen had pretty Much snapped off. So they’ve said they’d try and get a different brand screen and fitting it Monday, gives me a chance to get some wiring up the a pillar for roof lights
