Headlights not working

My 99 td5 disco has lost its headlights. When they are switched on, the blue high beam light in the dash comes on and stays on regardless, the headlights don't come on and only the offside side lights work front and back. At one point he near side headlight came on by itself a few seconds after switching on. While it was on dip and beam worked then it all went dark again.

Any ideas what's going on? Loose connection somewhere? What should I check first?
