Headlight problem

My headlights have stopped working!
The sidelights and rears work fine. I unplugged the switch and shorted the terminals, and the lights came on, dip & high beam both working. I reckoned the switch was faulty, so bought a new one, but the problem's still the same. I can flash the high beam.
The contacts in the indicator / lights stalk switch seem to be making contact normally. Could this be faulty? The stalk switch is quite new.

New parts are sometimes faulty. Before you send it back I'd make sure with a test lamp/voltmeter, although you do seem to have proved the wiring already. If it is faulty, it's most likely at the plug end of the switch. You can prove it by testing the continuity between the power feed and the light output wires when the switch is operated - easier done with it out of the vehicle.

Sounds like the switch, if the lights work when you shorted the circuit in place of the switch. Was it a real cheapo? Ask for a replacement and try again!
