So for the second time in two years the head gasket has gone but with two different heads. I have heard these blocks can develop hairline cracks when aged, can anyone confirm this categorically? Can it be tested if the crack only surfaces when hot?

All the while this cyl head was fitted the engine used coolant at about 1L every 500 miles without a leak, as I recall this head was solid last time I was using it.

I'm unsure what the best thing to do is;
disassemble-test-rebuild/scrap
or start with a tested guaranteed block and head for the price of another car. I don't want to reassemble using a used block, even a tested one, only for it to deteriorate in a couple of years though, I want to have some degree of certainty to this engine for once but I need some direction.

Just a thought, are M57 blocks compatible? I read the bellhousing and engine mount holes are the same, that's a start!

Or is there an engineering process that can make a good block out of a bad one?

Any and all thoughts are very welcome. Please give some suggestions! Thanks.
