Ive been told my block is cracked (4.0 ltr v8) by an engine rebuilder local to me, and no he did not offer to fix it, in fact he charged me nothing as he was going to set my LPG system up but found a few faults, this being the worst of them.

Any how ive seen a couple of fixes for the block or head gaskets but not this one, kseal has been used in my engine already but ive flushed the whole system out and replaced with 50/50 antifreeze. I get preasure build up in the top hose after about 5 miles it seams to hold out but with a very high preasured top hose, if i open the expansion tank cap the air comes out and i can then do another 5 miles ok.

Here is a link to this product, have a read and see if you think its worth a try, at best if it lasts over winter till i have managed to save enough for a good engine (tophat and tails) ill be hapy.:D

Are you sure you have a problem or just think you have? If you open the pressure cap with the engine hot you should get a lot more than air coming out. The system is supposed to pressurise, it is fitted with a 15psi pressure cap to raise the boiling point of the coolant. Any excess pressure within the system should be vented out of this cap. So if the cap is working correctly there cannot be more than 15 psi pressure which is normal. If the engine was overheating and you removed the cap coolant would be ejected quite forcably.

It must have had K-Seal in for a reason when i 1st brought it, the guy who said it was a crack in the block builds engines and installs LPG etc, this is the chaps

my symptoms are... say i start up, drive to next village 6 miles normal traffic few hills 30 mph to 50 mph. park up pop bonnet up feel top hose and its solid calnt press it in more than 1/4 inch, turn cap on expansion tank just a small amount air comes out and just before i here boiling water comming into the header tank i close the cap, then test the top hose again and its back to normal.

my son inlaw took it down a private road and thrashed it both ways about 1 mile in all, parked up and within 1 min it blew the top hose off covering the engine in water, top hose was held on by spring clip type fastner. so i have replaced with the screw type clips, it blows a lot of steam out the exhausts like water is getting into one of the cylinders and i had to top the headder tank up today with 2 ltrs of water within a week. but... the odd thing is the temperature gauge never ever gose above normal and it starts 1st time every time and tick over smooth on all 8 cylinders no water in the oil or oil in the water. I just get a lot of preasure in the top hose. could replacing the cap on the header tank make any change to the top hose preasure, a few people say if the top hose is preasurised to a point that you calnt press it in your head gasket or block has problems. its hard to tell about the steem as the weather is so cold its a normal thing to happen.

Check your rad they are renowned for failing and with the pressure you have had in yours I would say its prob gone along the seal between the alloy heat exchanger and the plastic top or bottom cap - if it has gone there you wont see it as the coolant that is lost is evaporated hence the pressurisation to be honest if it hasnt gone it will soon as they are weak.It wont overheat until your coolant gets to a low level and it loses pressure. I had this once chased cracked block etc for ages and the rad had gone letting air into the system not much but enough and weeping but evaporating no real evidence either whip the rad out it only takes 10 mins and hav a good look at the crimped edges or indeed you can get a new one for about 90 quid I think it may be a start point and with these you need to keep coolant system tip top I replace my rad every 40 k because they are ****e and weak. You could try putting k seal back in it first and see how it goes

I have a radiator spare thats been preasure tested so ill try K-SEAL first then if no change ill swap the radiators over. think im getting a collection of parts for just this problem, i also have two heads that have been skimed and preasure tested too :D

k seal will block your rad and water, as you leave it in all the time. for £25 or less you can get irontite, leave it in for day or two, drop it out leave to set for 24 hours, refill and jobs good for a while..

people say that but it hasnt done it to mine and thers 3 cans in there :D

flushed the heter matrix to be sure and was clear as a whistle plus you dont have to **** about draining filling etc

ive got the same problem so would be interested if the steel seal works for you as k seal hasnt worked for me, i might try irontite next but that will be after the cars been pressure checked for sliped liners/cracked block etc.

K SEAL 0. Range rover 1.
still steam comming out the exhausts, temperature still normal, loosing water some ware must be the block as the steam is never ending from the exhaust. think ill do a small video of the steam comming out the back tomorow.won a new header tank cap on fleebay so will try that as its a cheaper option at this very moment before i step up to the Steel Seal. Let us know clarkie if you buy this before i do, Ido know i need 2 bottles as its a v8, says something about this in the info so that makes it £51 with discount from my local motapoint shop. :D

will do mate, but engines not being checked untill next week,i think it a liner problem to be truthfull, get in touch with vougese39 on this forum hes mobile so can come to you (leicester based)hes got an endoscope to check the engine out thro the plug holes,at least i will get some idea of the problem then decide what to do as in second hand engine or save for a top hat block.but gonna try irontite or steel seal first, if i could just get 6 months to gather some funds to get me out of the dark and smelly,if not anyone want to buy a narrow boat:eek:

lets hope so fett mate,if not i can pick his brains for some ideas of what to do re second hand engine ect,i take it youve seen his rocket sled engines on his web site just need a lottery win now cause i want one the big one the full fat monster engine one:D

I have seen the real thing in his RRC and he does about 1 p38 engine build a month on average he was saying.

We just need to win the lottery like you say :D

Replaced my header tank cap with a cap of fleebay for i think around £3. took old cap off, replaced with new, now no preasure in top hose at all and far less steam comming from exhausts, even after a long trip and giving it some stick it was still as it was when we started out. with normal temperature, going to check the water level tomorrow. let you know. :)
