Hiya
some folks on here may say you have an issue but to be honest mine is exactly the same.As soon as Ive done about 5-6 miles its fine, the winter chill doesnt help; normally in the summer I dont have any pre-warming issues. The most common difficult gear is 2nd as the gearbox wears with age.
R380's are good 'boxes - they are very much a box you have to pause momentarily in neutral in between changing gear - if you end up not getting the gear at all then its time to get it out but until then I wouldnt worry about in my experience.

I hope you enjoy your TD5 - you'll have many ups & downs but it's worth it in the end!

Thanks lads just got rid of my BMW 520 d 55 reg to pay for it so I hope I don't have to many probs but if she wants a bigger caravan we need the tool to pull it
the differnces is well I leave that one with you lol hope I get to love it thanks agen lads

Have any of you changed the oil in the box,

I had this problem as well but then it started playing up even when it was warm, changed the oil and everything's been fine but starting to be a pest again so thinking it might need changed again. The Disco covers over 20k a year so that doesn't help things.

If it's any consolation mine is the same and what was said about not snatching gears is bang on. It's a completely different drive than a car, you'll soon get used to it and love it!

The Landy Gearbox is a BIG gearbox, not like the tiddly wee things in cars these days.

It can NOT be hurried or snatched amd it helps a lot if you match engine speeds when you shift gears. Even better, learn how to double-de-clutch, and then when the synchromesh packs up you can drive along anyway.

When COLD, the gearbox oil causes DRAG on the synchromesh rings, which makes gear engagement difficult but NOT IF ENGINE SPEED MTACHES GEARBOX SPEED at that moment. Take your time when changing UP, and let the engine speed drop as required.

From first to second, you will need almost exactly HALF the rpm in 2nd that it was doing in 1st when you shoved the clutch pedal down. The difference gets less as you go up the gears, but more as you change back down.

You guys need to try a fifteen speed range change crash gearbox! THAT is fun!

AS CHARLSEY sez its not a car gbox treat it more like a lorry or commercial gbox and you will find its ok,IE.first ,,clutch,,pause,,second,,clutch,,second pause,,third ....try it you will see the difference..its no bother when you get used to it ......hope this helps ...dave

CHARLSEY have you ever driven one of dem fuller roadrangers 8speeds and 3 ranges ,24 speeds all told ........yer ead hurts after a bit.....you can get lost i used to drive a COLES 40 TON SUPERTRUCK....it would do 75mph but you could lost in the gearbox phew...................dave

Not them, no, not 24 speeders.

But the MAN diesel 361 had a Fuller Range Change 15 speeder which was great to drive. A gear for every occasion!

the gears were set out First on its own, left and back.
2 3 4 and 5 set out like a car is for 1 2 3 & 4

On the HUGE gear knob is a switch that can be left, centre or right.

Lever Switch click LEFT

Drive gears 1 2 3 4 5 as normal, now doing about 12 - 15 mph in FIFTH gear. Now the fun starts ...

Switch click centre, change main gear lever to SECOND which is now 6th!
Switch click right .... dip clutch and it ups a gear - 7th
Switch click centre and change into 3rd which is now 8th
Switch click right .... dip clutch and it ups a gear - 9th
Switch click centre and change into 4th which is now 10th
Switch click right .... dip clutch and it ups a gear - 11th
Switch click centre and change into 5th which is now 12th
Switch click right .... dip clutch and it ups a gear - 13th ... MACH ONE!

There were two more to make the 15 (using main first), but they didn't help much and we didn't use them.

You had to pay attention or you could be five or even TEN gears out.

That truck could top a HUNDRED mph on the flat. Its regular driver was known as "Vallium", because he should have been fed the stuff before ever he was let on the public roads.

IT WAS OK BOWLING ALONG but when you came to a roundabout, changed down swapped ranges, down to second try to pull away STALLED FFS,what the hells wrong with this now only then you find you are still in mid range oooops, low range and away you dont half feel a right prat,,,,you can see all the muppets thinkin usless git cant he drive ....o dear dave

:D:DTids look what youve started now!! :D

I passed my HGV1 driving test driving a Leyland Badger artic that I had never seen before, and even during the test the examiner and I never did work out how many gears it had. Three things for sure, it had LOTS of gears, it was a full 'crash-box' with a 'stop clutch', and had no power steering.
I passed anyway.

That was 1971 I think. History now.
