Gearbox breather pipe. From gearbox to fresh air in engine compartment should be clipped to scuttle and have abend in it just after clip.

thanks wammers there was a 90 degree lose bit from one lying in engine bay with an angled cut top didint look like it went to anything but are they both breathers? other one connectsd above this one right at top just got hand in to feel it and this is not the gearbox this is further back!! gearbox is just behind engine
but i bow down to your knowledge!

and with both of them being melted to exhaust this wouldint cause a problem ten would it? thought i had found something there!

its not easy trying to explain myself when i dont know what things are! but this is not the gearbox?

are there no second opinons then?? as the suspension will be down soon then ill have to put it all back together to start it to try and get it back up again?

As Gemsdad says they should be open ended to allow the boxes to breath. However if you ever find you need to wade and they're shorter than they should be you risk having water sucked into the 'boxes as they cool in the water. I would aim to either replace them, or get a few feet of 6mm air pipe and a couple of joiners and extend them back to level with the top of the bulkhead, making sure they stay well clear of the exhaust.
