Hi I have not long purchased a 95 discovery 300tdi, after driving today for about 30 miles the metal on the handbrake was hot to the touch? this is the first time that i have noticed it, and the only thing that i have done is replace the ignition barrel since I last drove it.... Has anybody else had this issue? Or does anybody know what might be the problem??

warm not unusual , or are we saying ouch hot. asuming h/brake fully releasing could be electric/earth prob.

Thanks uncle Albert, It was hot ouch, I could not hold onto it I don't think the hand break was on at all no light on the dash anyway. Would this be an earth fault on the hand break it's self

No thinking more along lines that a bad chassis earth would cause lecy to find another way to earth. nothing directly around h/brake to make it hot so will say this is bit of ges/logic. I have known clutch cables etc do this.

if earths are bad then it will use the metal outer of the handbrake cable as an earth, this gets hot and melts the plastic sheath of the inner cable which then cannot release and holds the shoes in the on position.

thats why i said it, the op did,nt mention anything about smell or smoke !!!
yep true, but if yer driving it gets blown away underneath
happened to me, handbrake got 'sticky' then just seized solid, wouldn't release had to wind back adjuster to free drum. there was no smell or smoke

Thanks all… When I stopped there was a very slight smell of binding breaks and no smoke, but didn’t think that this would cause the metal on the h/break to get hot, and this is the first time I have noticed it, and it was only after about 18 miles, and I have done over 150 in the last few days

i would spend a while and re-do the engine earth might cure the handbrake problem by what your saying sounds like the handbrake shoes could well be binding a bit on the drum ........... as garth said may well pay to release the tension nut in the drum a bit ...

OK thanks robint thought about changing the braded earth cable on the battery just in case this was the issue, and will look at adjusting the h/break as well.

Thanks everyone, I cleaned up both the battery and engine earths, checked the hand break which was OK, then took it for 35 miles with everything running to the max, and no heat on the hand break, so touch wood it’s all good again…:5bhurray:
