Picked up this wheel at Peterborough over the weekend, I was told it would fit my 300 TDI fine as its 48 spline. However, turns out as mines a CSW model from the tale end of TDI production, it actually uses a 36 spline wheel, Who knew? These seem much harder to find annoyingly in good condition.

The one on currently on mine does let it down somewhat as the leatherette texture is all warn off and is very rough on the underside of it.

friend of mine is having this one off me. Now to find a 36 spline wheel in as good a condition.

i
f anyone has a 36 spline like below, but in much better shape. Let me know how much. The appearance of it in the flesh is bugging me.

The 36 spline steering column was typuically fitted to the 200tdi between 83 and 91 although there are a few cross overs. My 1994 300tdi is a 36 too.
I have a 48 spline boss if you are interested, so you can fit a smaller wheel £25 inc hermes delivery ?

thought the 200tdi didn't exist untill '89 & then not in defenderso_O
Rich.

Yes, the 36 spline was on the later series 3's and the early 90's (93" coils spring) early Defenders through the 200's and in some of the 300tdi engined Defenders (which came out in 1994).
I have not heard of a 36 after 1995 and I believe all TD5's are 48's.

The wheel you have (type C/D) is the only one that comes as a 36 or 48. I fell foul of his a while back when I changed steering wheels. in the end I bought one of the smaller aftermarket wheels which gives me a lot more room.

Unfortunately I can’t change my wheel for a smaller one as I just bought a large sized steering wheel lock and at £140 I am not buying another lol.

just never new the 300 TDI CSW was 36 spline.

l've got a very good 36 spline wheel for sale if you still need one.
l can send you a photo of it if you want. For some reason the 36 spline is rare.
lt's also got the centre piece and that's in perfect condition.

Can I ask if the hand free kit pick up anything but white noise :D as the sound system in a defender is a misnomer :D

i upgraded the head unit to a Blaupunkt Bremen and the speakers to Kenwood, it sounds excellent for two channel. I also packed a bit of foam around the new speakers to improve bass response in the dash.

my head unit looks like this

it’s a modern unit Blaupunkt make but styled to look like it’s from the late 80s.

Thanks how much do you want for it? Pics would be useful. Does it look like my one above?

I only want the one which looks the same as mine currently as I really like it. Not a fan of the later design with a flat centre bit.

Mines a 1999 300 TDI and it has 36. Apparently all the station wagons did up until the mid 2000’s. The non station wagons all have 48.

Can't fault you for changing the steering wheel,. I fitted new old stock on two previous Defenders I owned it makes such an incredible difference to the driving experience. Would love to find a new/old stock wheel for my D2.

Mine's a TD5 one, not sure what you mean about the "later type a with flat centre bit"

that’s very nice how much do you want for it.

I’m very sorry I haven’t been logged in for a few days, busy with work and such but very interested in it.

mines got a slightly different logo on it, but otherwise it’s the same.

some people don’t think this design of wheel are period correct on a 300 TDI, but it seems a fair few of the factory station wagons did have these type of wheels fitted especially some of the later 300s?

48 spline are plentiful but 36 spline are rare.

lt took me 3 years to find a good leather covered XS one (which is why l've got this one spare)
lt cost me £285, although it was a new one.

Looking on Ebay there's only been one good none-XS 36 spline wheel in the last few months and it sold for £100. Most are scabby with the surface finish worn away.

So how about £100 including postage?
