Gunked up starter motor

I just removed the starter motor after getting the infamous "click" on my 1987 LR 90. Lots of gunk built up inside. I'm curious if there is something else that I should be worried about due to this build up before installing the new starter today. Thoughts?

Might be oil dripping onto it from the return pipe of the turbocharger, they often leak.

As James says, locate and rectify the leak if possible.
 
Okay, thanks guys. Is the return pipe the short hose that is fastened by two hose clamps on each end? That was leaking a month ago and I replaced the hose and clamps only to have it start leaking again about a week later! Most likely user error on the fitment...

It comes in parts, there is a metal tube screwed into the bottom of the turbo, and then the rubber pipe and clamps at the bottom. They often leak around the union with the turbocharger itself. The pipe is quite hard to tighten, unless you have a 22mm pipe spanner.

Leaks on this pipe are not critical, because the oil has already lubricated the turbo, but they do make a mess.
 
I just replaced the starter and it cranks over now. However, the earth cable no longer has anywhere to attach (see picture below). On the old starter there was a bracket that it attached to but this new starter does not have it. Without it connected, I was still able to crank the engine so the starter is working but it still seems like this cable should be connected to the starter somewhere.

You will also notice in the lower left-hand corner of the picture, there is a earth cable that connects the engine block to the chassis. Is this why it is cranking over just fine without the other cable attached?
