I have been reading the threads regarding Green Laning and how best to start, choose routes etc... I live in Solihull, West Midlands and have a few OS Maps for the Malverns and Brecon beacons regions 1:25:000. Having read some of the guides to green laning, none of the byway markers suggested are on there, am i using the wrong mapping??:mil90: Or just lack of routes in those areas which i find hard to believe......

Also is there many options for me close by??

I have just spoken with Solihull Council who suggested a Lane between Chadwick End and Temple Balsall so will be heading off to have a look at that this friday or Saturday. Also on another thread someone suggested some lanes near Lapworth so they will be getting a visit, Boots at the ready to do a walk through first!!

You're doing the right things, but don't go laning on your own, especially your first go. Check out Trailwise for ideas for lanes...join your local club...all such things mentioned many times for noobs. Have fun :)

Hi mate. there's a few lanes around Warwick/ Stratford way if your interested let me know and I'll give you more details.
Found three around Barston area too!

Thanks guys, all the advice is much appreciated. Might go for step one on Friday and just have a drive out and locate the lanes, have a walk through and see what lies ahead for future days out! Have read the threads regarding kit to have on board so in the mean time I will get that sorted Before getting out there.

Let me know how you get on as i don't live far from you at HENLEY,I did the green lane out by ufton hill the other side of L/SPA that was ok but i did see a chunk of metal pole sticking out of the ground.I keep the front skirt on the front of my disco so idont like big ruts lol .......As i said let me know how you get on.

Will do, not long had my discovery and pretty sure it is all set up for road use so I am like you, will let you know how I get on and give you the details. Be good to have a day out with someone who knows what they are doing, and where they are going :D:D:D like snifflebag said, we don't want to be getting stuck anywhere with no one to help!!!

Its good to see someone taking the Advice that is so many times given to noob's on here, its great to see someone doing the ground work frist, rather then just get a 4x4 the seeing a lane and hammering down it.

As Sniffle bag says join your local club and join in, get to know the local guys, as you'll find out loads of info and get help with things as well.

As far as the maps go I find 1:25,000 Explorer maps are best, just due to their Scale, I do have a full set of 1:50,000 (due to larger area covered with less maps) of my local area as a back up that live in the car, other wise I use Memory Map on a PDA, there are plenty of treads on here aboout MM. That is my main source and use 1:25,000 maps on that, I find it an easy way of making seamless maps of the area you want, its also a good way of planing and recording your routes.

Oh by the way, go out and enjoy your new found toy/pastime, Have fun, it will not be long untill you take off the front valance, if some of the lanes are like the Essex ones.....

There's definitely a couple of good lanes in the Barston area, one with a ford as well. Wouldn't recommend driving them on your own though, they are all quiet soft this time of year and a good set of pruning gear would be of use in the summer as they get overgrown.

Thanks for that mate, just been out today so i could get familiar with the area and where the Lanes are. Had a quick look at them and walked most of the routes to get a feel for them before moving on to the next. The Lanes by Temple lane and the one off Brooke Green Lane looked good, had a fair bit of standing water so will hold off until i have someone to head there with.

Going to have a look at a couple more near Lapworth tomorrow, again just to get a feel for what it is all about.
