Hopefully someone can shed some light before I take it to the garage... 04 TD5 110

After 12 hours sitting, the engine oil level went from fine on the dipstick to reading low with a big ass puddle below!

As far as I can tell its coming from the turbo side of the engine around the engine mount but below the main oil filter, oil spinner isnt dry but its not soaked either.

The turbo oil return is however soaked in oil, which is my best guess.

HI Bankz,

Not teaching you to suck eggs, But I take it all the filters are tight. I know when I first got my TD5 canister filter was a little loose.

Then I would check the pipework. Have you taken anything of very recently?

Was it running for a while stationary?

Cheers

Alwayd appreciate your input neilly.

Yeah first thing I checked where the oil filters, all tight and dry around the seals so unlikely.

Yes it was, I always leave it running for about 30 seconds before shutdown, however this was not a small amount of oil.

12 hours sitting (outside), after an hour drive on the motorway -

10 minutes at the shop, running for about 10 seconds when i pulled up -

Well,

Looks like you got a wee problems there, Look on the bright side, you need never do another oil change as it now runs a total loss system , just keep topping up!

Seriously while it is still light outside , it may be a matter of lay underneath it and try not to get oil in your eyes.

Good luck, hopefully it is something silly.

Cheers

Luckily got use of my parents heated garage for the next few months so im pretty good time wise.

The only thing ive changed recently is the turbo, not that long ago but it was a pain to fit. Couldnt get the oil return to fit properly for ages.

Did do a p&p yesterday, im wondering if pushing it hard has blown a seal or something

Even only with heating....I am still Well Jell...................:p:p....

Cheers
Sheesh! A roof would be nice :( I could arrange a heater afterwards. It's coming to something when you've got to check the weather forecast before doing anything on the Disco!
Seriously, I've even been considering one of them there pop-up gazebo type things.

Thats exactly what I used to do before the garage, get one with sides and a space heater, works very well.

Eeek bout to try and see where this bloody oil is coming from!

Rather not have to buy a new oil drain at £98!

I believe I found the culprit! It appears to be leaking heavily from where the turbo meets the drain. Im guessing this is down to a failed gasket (new oem en route), is there a better alternative?

Had the landy running for 2 mins and it dropped around 5 - 10ml of oil at least. Going exactly where its been pooling.

Cheers for the conversation and help today boys!

OK,

Good to see you found it.

Was this a seal that was not replaced when you changed the turbo? or was it damaged when you had trouble fitting the turbo? If neither of the se why do you think it is fubarred? whichever, it looks like a good thing to keep in mind to replace if I ever need to replace the turbo.

Good luck.

Cheers

When I checked back on my notes it was a **** up on my part... The turbo came with a new soft/non metal gasket but it was damaged during fitting, so I reused the old metal gasket which looked alright, I had written down to replace it but never got round to it... Guess I should have changed it! I bought a metal gasket and a non metal gasket, I will probably use the non metal gasket as I think it may provide a better seal.

I did however polish up the oil drain mating face as it looked a little uneven which could be adding to the leak!

If it is the gasket 'tween turbo and drain pipe, then it's sometimes easier* to fit a new one with the turbo on the bench, and then reconnect the drain to the block at the lower end, back on the vehicle....:)
* easier is a relative term in the cramped are where all this gubbins fits:rolleyes:

I did think of that tbh! Tho ive done it 5 times now so ive found the exact way to mangle my hand under neath to fit :D haha

It is a right pain in the ass tho, just needs a little more flex and its be so much easier! I may look into getting one made up thats more flexi pipe that solid, was a plug for the Provent drain

Just glad I found it! Being mapped next week cant have it ****ing oil!

As Neilly said, above - I'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs...... but I always tighten the bolts with a torque wrench too - having seen one come loose a while ago.... and boy did that leak !!!

The majority i do aswell! However if you could get a torque wrench under there I would be bloody impressed!!

I seem to remember doing it once, with a variety of UJ's, extensions and such - but its less hassle to take the turbo orft, and do it on the bench - a PITA, but hopefully you'll only do it the once ( though to be fair, the words "hopefully", "once" and "land rover" aren't often used together IME .....:D)

Hahahaha exactly! Though lucky as I recently fitted a hybrid turbo so everything comes off easily! Been off twice today!

The first time however f*ck me dead that was hard, took 3 days! As the downpipe was seized SOLID to the turbo and every other bolt sheared. Ended up having to cut the fecking downpipe off from below! So i could pull the turbo out through the top!
