Good tyres for muddy tracks - thoughts please...

I've read loads of posts about tyres and Wheels and Tyre Sizes but what I'm after is a few thoughts / experiences of AT vs. MT especially BFG, Grabbers, Coopers etc.

I have a standard Disco II (2004) which is my daily transport, I'm out in the woods a lot teaching bushcraft (it's my day job), in the Chilterns and the woods I now use has a long and muddy track!!

Current tyres are Pirelli Scopion's 255/65 R16, great on road, ok in dry'ish shallow mud but rubbish when it gets wet and muddy, just like slicks! The track is not deep mud, mostly just a few inches deep with an old metalled track underneath - so like driving across a grassy field with a couple of hills!

Thoughts and experiences of AT vs. MT driving along muddy tracks would be appreciated - thanks

All I can say is I find my BFG MT 285/75/16 on my 90 horrible when I try to climb out of even the smallest rut, if you find yourself tramlining, I assume as you are in the Chilterns you have a chalky base as well. When it comes time for replacement I am going for AT on the 90.

One thing it may be worth considering is whether to fit a the CDL to yours if you are on the tracks a lot and it gets slippery.

@neilly like the idea of a CDL, hadn't thought of that, thanks - but when I just managed to get out of the woods yesterday, all tyres were slicks, so maybe in combination with better tyres!

Not really my bag I’m afraid I had the luxury of multiple LRs so used MT on my off-roaders..

I have grabber At2 on my navara, and they seem to go anywhere, the new AT3 by grabber look good !

I am using the cooper discoverer pro muds, and very impressed with not only in the mud but how good and quiet they are on road

I'm driving much in mud but untill that mud much on road, the best combination for both environments i found untill now is Cooper Discoverer AT3 235/70/16 M+S, i found them better than BFG ATs.... a bit bigger than std but still within decent limits(1.9%) and decent price as well...i didnt ever had general grabbers which look good as well as i can't compare

I have been told that these are pretty impressive in both on- off road.

What speed and load rating do they have?

From my l'ill opinion, at a quick glance, there may be an issue with load rating and speed rating. Would be worth discussing with the insurance company before fitting in the UK anyway.

Khumo KL71s are good for the price, one of the best all round mud biased tyres I used aside from the silly tyres I had before, insa turbo special tracs.

I’ve read KL71’s wear quickly. I’ve got Kumho MT51’s, more than happy so far. They’re a hybrid MT, some noise but not enough to bother me.

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments - I've decided to go for a set of AT's on my Disco, General Grabbers AT3. They were fitted this morning and I went straight down the woods to see how they would perform. They were great - the ground is drying out a little, but still plenty of mud for them to tackle, which they did and I got home at the end of the day too, a bonus!
