Hi guys

i ordered some new glow plugs off ebay that came in the post today and want to fit them today and would like to know is it better to replace them with the engine cold or warm or does it not matter as i have never fitted them before.

I dont think it matters, easier to do cold so you dont get burnt fingers, i fell down on the 5 cylinders but only 4 plugs trap, I didnt know the 5th cylinder was a slave, clever buggas these TD5's, luckily someone on here put me right.

thanks guys

i managed to do them luk warm as i started it up and drove the disco into the garage, my very first job on the new to me disco in my new garage :D anyway after replacing the glows i went to start the engine and it was just the same starts after a few cranks so i tested the old glows and they all worked so i then removed the new ones and tested them and they all work, i know i need to test to see if i have power to the glows but my meter and test light are somewhere in the shed which i will try and find tomorrow ( can't move into the new garage yet till i can paint the floor  ) but can anyone tell me where the timer unit is on a 1998 tdi auto as i was expecting it on the o/s/f/ inner wing but i can't find it.

up date on glow plugs i only found my test light in the shed as there is too much to get out and its throwing it down here, anyway tested for power at no 4 glow plug and there is plenty there then i checked the other 3 glows and there is but remembered when i tested both sets new and old it was only the very tips that glowed, i tested them all individualy and gave them all just over 5 secs so thinking that both sets are faulty am i right.

Only the tips will glow red initially then it will spread down the post a little-if the plugs are glowing red within 1-2 secs, they are fine
