Dunno really how to describe the problem but here goes:

The springs that hold your stick near gears 3/4 in neutral, dont seem to be working. Well on is lazy and now it hangs around near 1/2.

Not a problem i here you cry - until you try to drive it and have to fish around for 3 or 4. And after a 12 hour nightshift of driving ambulances with dodgy gearboxes, you dont wanna faff around with an even more dodgy box when all u wanna do is get to bed!

So im guessing its not an easy DIY repair, cos theyre gonna be down in the box aint they?

Some carefully positioned bungee cords on either side of the stick is what I think we need here...

Hi, Been looking into this myself as mine's gone too. Basically the springs act on the bottom of the stick itself, but to get at it, looks like the centre console has to come out, then drill out a bunch of pop rivets to remove the cover, (be carefull with the seal) to access the springs either side of the stick. Just 1 bolt holds them on with adjusting screws either side to set the stick in 3rd / 4th position. Let us know how you get on if you do it yourself. Mine's off the road right now, so no plan to do it too soon.

Im getitng an exploded diagram of the box and having a look at that before attempting to do it.

theres a plate that bolts to the top of the grearbox that 2 springs act against to hold the gear lever in the 3rd and 4th plane, the tag has broken off the plate.

take out the center console, drill out the rivets and remove the gaiter, undo 4 10mm bolts around the gear lever and remove the cover, the plate is inside, you'll see the bit that has broken off
