Well, after the troubles with the transfer box on my disco that in end exploded, now its the 90!!!

My friendly land rover mechanic, which is my neighbour, took my 90 to work with him this morning to do a complete oils change ( as I cant be fked to lay on my back on my drive and dont have enough leaverage to undo the plugs)

Anyway, that's all fine, but to start with he says the magnets on the bottom of the transfer box are full of metal bits..and the oil that was in there was almost mud! great!!

and secondly, the 90 had been making a rubbing noise, kind of metal noise when driving, which I thought it was a brake pad rubbing, or a wheel bearing, but he just called me saying its the bearings in the gearbox? as even if you press the clutch, the noise is still there!

does anyone have any experience, or know about these bearings fault? is this a case of putting another gearbox in? can the bearings be replaced?

bollocks! and this just has the winter season is starting!!!

Ask Ashcrofts?
I wud be tempted to change the box if yu can get one easily. then refurb yo old one with all the money you are saving on fuel at the mo ;).

My mech has a guy who rebuilds gearboxs for him... he says its expensive to do it, but its like having a new gearbox.....
He also said that if I can put up with the noise, then I can just drive it like that until it lasts...

really didnt need this now! the rest of the 90 is perfect!

Got the 90 back from the mech on sat...

Well, the bits on the magnets werent as bad as I thought he said, and the mud was in the diffs...
So everything has new fresh oil in...

but the feckin gearbox makes a hell of a noise!!! sounds almost like its working on dry... changing to fresh oil didnt make a difference!!
its so loud that i can even hear the radio almost in full blast!!!

:( fkin thing!

bloody hell mate you is nearly as unlucky as me
what is yours 300tdi aint it?
find out what the cost of a rebuild is then price them on fleabay its not like you are driving it all day every day its just a toy , would go for a second hand 1 if i was you ;)

it has a 200tdi disco engine in it...

Found a gearbox on ebay, not far, for 195 or best offer, but its off a Disco... it's the LT77 though, so should be fine for my 90?
or do I need to change something on it?

Discos and 90s were both fitted with the LT77 gearbox, but not sure if they were different as both land rovers are different?

Your knobs will be in the wrong place;)

hooo yeh! didnt think about it!
on the disco its transfer lever in front of gear lever
on the defender is the other way round..

will this be a problem? or doesnt make a difference? it will still go through the gearbox tunnel holes i suppose...?

Is that the only thing? or there something else I might need to change?
the transfer box is different from the ones used on the discoverys though, so will this be a problem?

Bell housing is too long needs a strip down and new shorter input shaft putting on Buy an early pre TDI or 200 TDI gearbox for a defender all others differ and are not a straight bolt in job.

EDIT depends how its been moded where is your engine mounted? up close to your bulkhead or do you have a big gap between the eng/bulkhead

hooo ffs!! why does it have to be so hard???

the fkin disco had loads of rot, welded the whole damn thing and then the tranfer box goes up...

the 90, is great nick, dont drive it for 6 months, get in and there's this stupid noise off the gearbox!!!

why couldnt I get something simpler to happen? like rotted floors, or rear cross member... lol

So, let me see if I get this right...

I have a Disco 200 engine, with a defender gearbox and transfer box. but the gearbox, LT77, altough has been used on both land rovers, on the disco it has a longer bell housing...so straight off a disco, wont fit!

Yup then you need a 200TDI LT77 long stick or any an lt77 long stick from 200TDI or any pre 4 cylinder 90/110's. Remember there is also different Ratio's military had one with much lower 5th gear and 1st. Honestly your best bet is Ashcroft. I know I had a bad experience with them but honestly............................Who else do you trust? Its £500 but it comes with a years warranty. I have fitted s/h boxes from big companies and from ebay both were a waste of time however being a poor student at the time it got me through a tough cash flow period.

Im just thinking, the 90 is not my everyday car, I only drive it over the winter to the salisbury plains and back.. I probably do 1000 miles a year, maybe not even that.... is it worh spending 500quid? plus fitting...as I dont think i could do it on my drive...

Ok, so disco gearbox is not going to be an option here then...
will need to find a defender box....

Jai... its something like this that I need right?

LANDROVER DEFENDER GEARBOX LT77 5 SPEED MANUAL on eBay (end time 22-Sep-10 13:52:54 BST)

If i understood it right from your explanation, on the LT77 fitted to the disco, the shaft on the left of the silver housing (on the auction pic), is longer?

Actually, just had a look at a pic of a disco gearbox and its the silver housing (bell housing) that is a lot bigger on the disco!
Are the shafts the same though? if they are, if I buy a box of a disco, cant I just unbolt the bell housing and swap for the one on my 90?

Things to look for.

Bell housing length the defender/early 90/110 ones are half the length of the disco ones,

Long stick means the defender type turret.

The one on Ebay looks about right. it has (by the look of the pic) the correct length bell housing and the turret mount looks good. However being left open all kinds of **** may have got in it.

The one on ebay is missing the bell housing right?

if I get this right, on the pic on ebay, the silver part connects to the transfer box and the black part to the bell housing, which is not there but I can take it off the one I have on my 90?
Also, can I swap bell housing from disco to defender? not sure if all the bolts line up and stuff ?

If that was possible to do, what about this one?
this was the first I was looking at... its close to me, and it looks good, the splines on the shaft look new...
My thought was to get this one and replace the bell housing...but then you mentioned shaft lenghts, so Im not too sure if this one would do the job now...
