Gearbox has gone and bust

Hi all.
I am a Land Rover novice and need some help.
I am fairly new to Land Rovers - I had one 20 years ago for a few months that I loved but had to sell when my (then) new wife said either it went or she did.
I have fairly recently acquired another....a C reg Diesel 90 complete with rust and oil dripping from the engine and gearbox....lovely.
Problem I have got is that I have lost drive from the gearbox - I only get drive when I engage the diff lock.
Have I bust the transfer box, the gearbox or something else?

If you only get drive with difflock then the gbox is likely ok and transfer box probably is too (unless an output from the centre diff has broken).

Might be a problem in either the front or rear diff.
Also could be a stripped drive shaft (where it enters the drive flange at any wheel)

I know the splines wear on 110 rear axles and in extreme cases strip... resulting in no drive unless difflocked... although I think the flange/d'shaft arrangement is slightly different on the 90... so maybe not.

Try talking with Ashcroft transmissions 01582 496040 - they do all the drive train bits and are brilliant value / v. helpful.

Thanks TDI Nush
I think you are right...some expensive sounds are coming from the front axle when a gear is engaged without diff lock...so I now suspect CV joint/Diff/spline problems..and as you say maybe its not the gearbox or transfer box.

This is good news as I didnt fancy fixing or exchanging the gearbox and I plan to pull the suspension out anyway and replace shocks and springs. Whilst I have the wheels off I may as well work my way up the axle and see what the problem is.

Thanks again

Ray
