Garage Essentials

Hello!

I'm new to all this having just bought my first defender (H Reg 90 200tdi) and i'm about to start doing some work underneath the Landy.
Done plenty of research regarding the mechanical side which im not worried about but my garage is not so stocked up with all the necessary lubricants, sealants, grease etc and all the different variants you get with those.

Currently doing some shopping with my halfords trade card but i can see the basket going up and up with items i think i may need or i saw someone using online so thought i would see what a Defender owner actually keeps and uses rather than buy the same thing in 5 different forms.
My next job will be to replace the drive flanges on rears and clean up differential.

good socket set.
good spanners
halfords pro items are excellent, and have a good warranty.

general grease for bearings etc, and a grease gun/syringe for the propshafts.

good axle stands, good proper jack.

viscous fan spanner, is handy, also so is a defender box spanner for the wheel bearing lock nuts.


buy the rest as you need - timing tool kits etc

Multimeter.
Prop shaft tool is nice to have.
Torch
head torch
Brake cleaner pump
Blue paper rolls
6 Sided sockets if not in the Halfords set, I recommend the 200pcs set.


But the list never ends. I reckon the Halfords trade card is going to get a beating...LOL

Think buying as i need will be the way. Very easy to run costs sky high.
Out of interest, would you consider a torque wrench essential?
Never had one but think i will go for the Halfords Torque Wrench 200 Model (40 – 200Nm), more for piece of mind when doing bolts up.

Not wrong there, so many items ive always struggled to get on offer in the past and theyre much cheaper on trade, Never knew.

I would use one if I were you. You will get a feel for that is right, but to stop you overtightening to start with then it cannot hurt. Even on things like wheels.

do not forget to download the RAVE file, it is a digital workshop manual, may not have everything covered for the 200tdi, but a lot will be similar.

yeah deffo, i have a low range one and a higher range one, i do everything to book specs torque wise and have never had a problem with things coming undone either unintentionally or deliberately

I second (or third) the Halfords Pro Socket set (200) - they replace anything that breaks for free - had 2 replacement star drivers so far ... no quibble.

also

• a lightweight sledge hammer (Wickes do a good one)
• grease gun - VIP get one with a coupler fitting - makes a crappy (but important) job a joy
• a big breaker bar - some jobs just need a bigger lever than the kits supply
• rivet / rivnut tool

Ooooh shiny new tool , but how does it fit in the tighter areas. Is it OK? Looks like it might be a PITA to fit on certain fittings including maybe the UJ's?

Exactly what I was thinking, not sure how that would work with propshafts tbh

Wouldnt be without one of these. funny how every one wants to use it, but i never allow it of the workshop...

you will need some A/F spanners and possibly sockets def a 9/16 spanner

loving my 1/2 drive milwalkee battery powered wrench...

Have been looking , found univer and sparex unts that look smaller. But are not cheap at approx 30 notes
