hi all im in the process of doing a chassis swap iv managed to strip down and have my new galv chassis but my question is where can i have my axles galvanised,if finished stripping them down today and made a phone call to my nearest galvanising plant (im in seaford sussex) only to be told they dont do axles,i could prob go to a place in hailsham but they only zinc spray and would rather have it hot dipped, any one got any advice, cheers guys

Not an expert, but if you go to all the trouble of blanking to prevent galv getting inside the axles, wouldn't there be a risk of explosion in the galv bath.

I had mine hot zinc sprayed.
In fact, apart from the chassis and bulkhead more or less everything else was hot zinc sprayed.

I can't say, it was a back door cash in hand thing. The guys sneaking my stuff in would get the sack, company policy was new items only.
It was very expensive to have done if it went through the front door.

theres a place in hailsham iv just seen on there website they do hot zinc spray ill give them a ring monday

Hi Paul, the fun begins! :D I'm ready to lend a hand or cast an eye - just being nosey really but it'd be great to see the build up  You've got my mobile no or send a PM if you need a hand or just want to show it off.... galvanised chassis...drool! I'll be tightening up exhaust manifold bolts Saturday morning but free after lunch and most of Sunday.
No idea about the axles, mine have always been painted and not a problem, yes get surface rust but never had one rust through (yet!).

Hi. I have a galvanised chassis & bulkhead. Just got rid of my galvanised doors. As for axles no chance... just think how much work to retap threads etc.
I did have 1 done as a test and found these problems. I just wax oil mine.

@aaronmorris has done rebuilds and galvanised his axles, but he He might get in touch when he logs on.

Why did you get rid of your galv doors?

I now have split military doors. So I can remove door tops. Alot cheaper and easier to replace than the early lift up handles of 90 doors. Use the lift up handles so they don't get ripped off while green laneing

Even if painting or blasting the axle, you'll need to tap the threads to clear the muck out of them.

nobber - there's no issue at all from a structural perspective - the zinc is just a coating, and as long as the bolts are torqued up, all will be fine.

I went for the sandblast, etch and paint route - I may even stonechip too.

FYI, galv is more susceptible to salt corrosion than a painted finish or even plain steel. To galv is better than nothing as it will protect the steel, but it is somewhat of a sacrificial coating if not painted.

But when tapping can you be sure you are clearing the threads and not cutting new ones?
