Had a great day yesterday green laning around the Corwen/Bala area and I am still grinning so I needed to share it with the world!:D:D:D
This was the first time for us so went with a local company, Get-Wet who were really good, chosing routes which had just the right level of difficulty without running too much of a risk of damage.
Did the Wayfarer which had some tricky rocky sections, especially with underslung LPG tanks!!! But the climax of the day was the Carwash near Corwen when the river was pretty high. Came up to the headlights on our standard height Disco and could feel the current pushing us downstream, the fact that it's a V8 petrol with no snorkel made the experience all the more satisfying when we scrambled out with only a couple of damp patches on the carpet to show for it...

I can't believe you paid. There's hundreds of people on landy forums who go out in that area every weekend. Who would happily have taken you for nothing. and crossing a river in spate in a petrol V8 doesn't sound like safe guiding to me. How many other vehicles were in the group?

Not wanting to offend anyone on here who might have offered, but with being new to the forum I felt it a bit cheeky to ask people to take us out on routes before we got to 'know' them...
There were two other vehicles with us (we were the only customers) and both of them made it over OK, it was completely my own choice to cross as there was no pressure on me to go over. I actually asked to go and look at it, just so I knew where it was for reference later, but decided to give it a go after it was deemed driveable.

Well don't be paying again As I said there's lots of people on this and other forums who go out all the time and most of them will be more than happy to let you tag along. In fact many of them object strongly to Pay to Drive companies charging people to drive on public highways.

OK, that sounds like a good idea. Fair enough I realised that we are paying to drive somewhere we could drive for free, but without already knowing someone locally who would go with us in case of problems, and not knowing what lanes would be suitable for us, we reckoned that the price we paid was well worth it...
I was well impressed with just what a standard Disco could do! (Only previous experience off-road has been our track, and a spot of Production Car Trials a few years ago)

sounds good, got my disco back out to play now so some lanning in north wales sounds good to me, you hear of anymore trips then give me a shout.
brave man crossing a river with no snorkel in a petrol mate, i push it in a tdi!

Just how much did you pay for a day out ?, only asking as If its cheap enough might go out myself with them for a change

brave going though the Afon Alwen crossing with a V8 without a snockel, if you stalled fair chance once the bow wave had gone your engine floods, on a v8 that 8 plugs to remove, i've seen the odd engine destroyed by trying to restart. Did anyone give advice on that ?

the *** wash has had some bad press recently not many are admitting to do this since.

They normally charge £80 for a half day in their own vehicles but said they'd knock £20 off as we went in our own. Not sure if this would be cheaper per vehicle if there was more than one 'customer'.
Yeah, I was aware of the risks if the bow wave stopped but was confident with the ignition system (LPG tends to show up any weaknesses so it's in top notch condition...) I did swap it over to petrol before the crossing for that reason but switched over to gas fine straight afterwards. When I say "pushed sideways" I didn't mean we were floating away, just that you had to aim slightly upstream to keep going straight.

Well you obveiosusly enjoyed yourselves, but £80 for half days laning, well £60 then no wonder only one of you, anyhow forget money spent and instead spend some time watching a couple of forums, this and a few others, pm me and I'll tell you them, esp the greenlaning sections looking for people going out at weekend

Casue if you want to go out again team up with someone from them and do it for FREE and some go out for the whole day again its FREE, plus often some blokes doing it years know the tracks routes, and your vechicles and again there advice is FREE. Better still some go for weekends on exactly the same routes, drink plenty of beer in wild camp sites and apart from your fuel its FREE.

If you do want to pay try simply 4x4 he's only £30 for the whole day, or a couple of local clubs again most do it for free as its there hobby.

80 fookin quid ffs yer could have stayed at our house as well for that. i ****in hate these ****ers that charge to take folks green laning it really pusses me off. ffs how can you charge someone to follow you on a public right of way. these pricks are just taking the **** and laughing at anyone who goes with them. if you wanna go laning around any area just ask on the forums as has already been suggested. i am based in north wals and thwe lanes these pricks took you on are the mildest and most over used l;anes in the area. the merseyside lads seem to do a fair bit in north wales and so do we. you are more than welcome to come out with us anytime you like. and im sure raz and his mates would say the same. and the beauty of it is, we wouldnt charge you.

Seem to have opened up a whole can of worms here...:)

Perhaps I should mention that it was a Christmas present, and that one of the alternatives looked at was the Land Rover Experience which was considerably more expensive!!! Yes I realise that 99% of people who are doing a lane anyway as a hobby would not charge a newbie who wanted to tag along with them, BUT we didn't want to be a drag on anybody by not wanting (on our first time out) to do advanced stuff, or run the risk of biting off more than we could chew.

I know it seems like a lot of money but if you think about the costs of taking 2 vehicles up there to go with us, plus wages for 3 blokes then it doesn't seem like we were ripped off in that sense. Anyway, main thing is that we enjoyed the whole thing, and will be doing it again (without paying...) maybe with people from this forum. (Also found another useful one that I have been looking at).

Don't worry about it mate, money spent gone now and a nice xmas present, as for Land Rover Experience well I was told by a newbie most of the time spent in class room and a couple of times getting stuck in a bog . He then for FREE joined us doing some pretty rough stuff and said after learnt far more in day with us than a week with experience. As for been a newbie don't worry about it, we were all once and remember that, just admit to your inexperiance someone will not doubt put you in the middle and your'll be fine. Its those who claim they are experianced, when they are not, are the ones to watch. Only thing I would advise is a stong rope and some kind of front & rear tow point.:D

wow damn patches?? not sure if mine is completely well sealed!! not risk it thou! but I would like to go green lane without any damage to mine

yeah land rover experience yiou do spend about half the time in a class room teaching you stuff like "if the water is 18feet deep dont drive in it, walk the section first" but they do send you out in their own motors. i went in a 4 week old rangie vogue all whisltes and bells. It not that expensive i think the wife paid £75 for mine which is cheaper than your day before your discount and if you buy a landy from a main stealers they send you out in an equivelent vehicle to one ya just bought for nowt.Ill have two please!

Many of these commercial outfits have no insurance and some break road traffic acts by going in large groups and never put back anything into our hobby like lane maintance days. Join a club like LLROC or CRAG and go for free with fellas you know what they are doing.

if a "green lane" is a public highway - why are there limits as to the number of vehicles on it at anyone time?
I can understand the "wear and tear" argument, but when does two lots of 4 peeps become one lot of eight? I cant see the police telling peeps on the M4 " no more than 4 at a time please".

It is illegal to travel in Convoy on the Public Highway with more than six vechicle unless permission has been obtained from the Police before hand
