I have had my 2002 V8 Disco getting on for 7 yrs, I have been getting the oil changed every 5,000 miles and use Mobil One 10w 40, I've recently been told not a good idea, she has 170,000 on her and seems fine, and uses very little oil between changes. Any thoughts please?.

Not an expert, but I wouldn't use it. A high detergent mineral / semi synthetic with zinc zddp to protect the top end.
15/50 or 20/50 valvoline vr1 would be my preference but I don't have cats and I believe the zddp can damage cats / no zddp can damage cam / lifters

Ok, thanx for the reply.

+1
Bit of a conflict here when it comes to choosing engine oil - on the one hand your 2002 Disco is still powered by an engine design from the early 'sixties, but as said the ideal oil is allegedly bad for the cat(s)
Easy choice for my RRC as no pussies underneath either, suggest you talk to a lubricants advisor - that's if you can find one who knows what a RV8 is o_O

You could always try the smaller oil companies like Miller's or Penrite. Personally I run mine on Shell Helix bought at my local supermarket, and change it every 2,500 miles. It uses some but I suspect most of it is leaking rather than being burned.

Thanks Neil, Yeah, mine is through seepage, I have to add half a quart bottle inbetween my 5,000 mile changes, my engine sounds strong never had an issue with it tbh, she had 81,000 on her when I bought her at 9 yrs old, I've put 90,000 on her in the almost 7 yrs I've had her, been up and down the East Coast between Key West and NYC alot, also pulled heavy trailer up and down mountains in West Virgina. She defo has a strong motor.

Probably not an issue for you considering the mileage, if you are on the original cam it will be very worn and changing the oil grade isn't going to grow new lobes. As long as what you use is in the range quoted by land rover, you might as well carry on or go for something slightly thicker, and have a rethink if you feel the need to renew the cam / lifters in the future

Thanks for the info Cooltide, hoping I don't need to put too much money into her before I bring her home tbh, whats the typical cost of a cam job back home anyway?
