I posted a thread a week or so ago about my concerns regarding a new vented filler cap. When I undid the cap there was a sharp intake of air suggesting a vacuum build-up. Today however the reverse seems to be happening. When filling up today I noticed the cap almost popped when I undid it due to a build up of pressure. I was worried about this and stopped after a few miles to undo the cap and fuel erupted out spraying the road ( and my shoes ). I will change the cap asap but could these issues by related purely to the cap not venting or could it be more serious ? Thanks.

What engine do you have? This is a typical sign of boost diaphragm failure on a 2.5TD (19J) engine. The way that older Lucas / CAV injection pumps are manufactured allows boost pressure to find its way back into your fuel lines should the diaphragm be punctured, perforated or perished. If you have a later engine such as the 200 or 300 tdi however, it could be a similar problem or there could be a blockage along the lines to one or more of your injectors. Does your engine run rough or have a lack of power?

Thanks Pos, I do have the 2.5TD 19J. I'm not too certain if the engine is rough as this is my first Landy and I have only had it a few weeks so don't have any points of reference but it doesn't feel problematic ( and two different garages have worked on it in the last two weeks without comment ). I will find a new filler cap and if the problem persists I will have the diaphragm looked at. Would this be a big job ? Thanks.
