I have a 2.5L diesel RR. 1996. Been working fine. Saturday It just would not start. AA said it possibly fuel pump by fuel tank. Relay only recieving 0.96amps. Garage said it maight be pump or injectors, but they have'nt got the equiptment to do a diagnostic. Electrical Auto's said if engine management light not on then a diagnostic is pointless. I have air in the fuel line. All i got is to check the pipe back to the tank, change the fuel filter and check the solanoid.
Anyone got any ideas ?
thanks

dont listen to the aa all they do is check fuse for pump and say its not working ive had this twice once aa once rac even thou i told them whats wrong. I take it your car is turning over but not firing no matter what you try all it needs is a relearn the becm has lost sync with the key all it needs is a few mins on diagnostics to reset it about £40-50 or you can buy a sync mate of ebay for £120 thats all nothing serious like pump etc

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll sort that out and let you know how i got on. Ford said they could probably fix it for £1200. Told them where to shove it. good job i did. Thanks guys.

good luck it is quite a common problem mine has done it twice in about months ans both times they said it was pump 1st time i came on here was told relearn but try this and that i took tank off jumped the pump all ok then stop solenoid etc when it happened this time told the rac what it is but no they dont beleive you so had to have all the checks only to be told i might be right had it carried to local garage and 2 mins later all done

Hi
Mines a 97 2.5DSE. Exactly same just over a week ago. ( Mileage 150k).
Check showed tank pump was dying/dead. I read somewhere that this is not uncommon around 100k.
I replaced pump by going through the floor ( see my thread last week) : RR now starts first time every time which it never did before. ( Usually required three glows on the plugs.) I had put it down to glow plugs needing done. It looks like it was a dying pump which was not delivering.
I did the easy checks like fuses and relays then.....
Unscrew fuel filter. Turn on ignition. If Fuel does not spew out....simples....your tank pump is deceased.
When I took mine out I was able to ID a fault where fuel was partially spitting out in the wrong direction : ( Immersed pump in a bucket of diesel )I have not yet examined the old pump in detail.
Good luck.

The fuel pump does NOT turn on when you switch on ignition. It only pumps when engine is being cranked or when engine is running. I have no doubt your pump was faulty, but to say if no fuel comes out with ignition turned on pump is shot is not correct.

so whats the humming noise coming from my fuel tank when i,ve turned my ignition on?lasts for about 12 secs and ****es fuel out of the fuel feed pipe if cracked open.

I have to agree. The pump in the tank is a priming pump. Mine went on the DSE I had. It would still start but only if there was over a quarter of a tank. Below that, it would not start. Also, if it was running and I went round a sharp bend with it on a quarter or less, it would cut out. I also had this on a Sprinter van because of the same problem.
How much fuel is in your tank?
The other problem is not that the pump stops but the connecring pipe from the pump to the outlet comes adrift so the pump just sucks the fuel up and spits it out into the tank.
Check your fuel level first.

Would that be a petrol engine by any chance? On the range rover V8 the pump is turned on by switching ignition on to prime system to 3.5 bar then is switched off until after engine starts.

Thanks for that Wammers.
Every day is a school day...especially here with such knowlegable guys around.

no matey,2.5dse

May depend on year then. But it states in RAVE that the fuel pump relay is activated by cranking the engine. When engine starts and ignition is returned to on, a voltage balance from the alternator takes over to hold it down. This from RAVE for year 1999-2000 Range Rover.

Further to this for all those disbelievers.

RANGE ROVER Electrical Trouble Shooting Manuals.
REF A6, DIESEL ENGINE Page 4.
QUOTE

FUEL PUMP RELAY

The fuel pump relay is pulled in when the starter motor is activated the earth path provided by the alternator output. When the engine is running, the starter motor is deactivated, supplying an earth path while the generator supplies a feed I.E. a polarity reversal.
END QUOTE.

But reading between the lines that could mean several things. Activated could mean used or available to use.

Sorry guys. all fixed. Bought a becm sync mate off ebay for £120. plugged it in and 5 seconds later it was sorted. started it up ( with a bit of smoke out the exhaust ) and it now runs lovely. Thanks for all your suggestions, well most of them lol.
Thanks to P38on22s. very helpful.

just to clarify, your symtoms of just not starting was a out of sync becm? What if you know that your in tank pump is actually dying? does it too just suddenly stop? I have to run at the moment with a min of half a tank otherwise its a pig to start.
Another job when it stops raining!
