Hi guys just wondering what could be wrong with my fuel pump or filter, today on each start up Iv had a noise, wouldn’t say a gurgle but more a high pitched whine or strangled cat kind of noise, the same noise as you get from system priming after fuel filter change on td5, each start up it makes the noise for Maby 2/3 seconds, fires fine and seems to run fine and can’t here the pump in car, I only noticed it as I started it outside the car this morning, iv got a britpart filter on that’s done about 4000 miles or so, to my knowledge it’s not had O rings or copper washers done, previous owner had fuel pressure regulator replaced but don’t know the pump age. Anyone any ideas what would be causing the noise? I do plan to find out if it’s pump or filter area noise to try and narrow it down, car has been fine lately and on a recent 1000 mid trip did fine with decent 33mpg from a auto. Cheers guys.

That’s the one mentioned in other posts where people clean one but leave the one inside? Is that something that would happen overnight sort of thing? As it seemed quiet other day on start up, just started today Realy, I did have the noise ages ago and fuel light was about to come on so filled to half and it went quiet, currently it’s about 1/4-1/3. Tank.

Just been out and tried to pinpoint filter or pump but couldn’t however it makes this noise each time without starting engine, engine has been fine to start but then just turned key to position 2, 3 times and each time it makes the priming noise then if I don’t start it after about 20-30 seconds noise stops dead.

Mine does this quite regularly but only when it's getting low I presume it's trying to suck sh*t up but when I fill it full the noise is low I havent bothered looking into mine yet but I wouldn't worry as long as it's running.

It’s strange how it’s started today, yet just done 1005 miles perfect, albeit with 1/3rd or more fuel in it. If weather is ok tomorrow I’ll get pump out and have a look see if there’s any muck on it, does the sealing ring definitely need replacement or would it be ok to reuse? Just to see if cleaning pump helps as I can’t get a seal till next week.

That is something only you will know about the sealing ring if it is perished or hard then replace it if not I would put it back on.

To be honest as the pump and filter is a critical part of your motor and pretty cheap to replace......replace the lot before it let's you down and dont use ****part either

I don’t fancy just buying a pump at there cost for a genuine one if it’s not the pump, that’s why even though I don’t have a new sealing ring I’d still like to open it up and see if mesh screens are manly as some report noise goes away after cleaning. It’s worth a chance, filter I’ll source this coming week, local motorfactors and Landy parts places both shut Sundays.

I think u will be ok u can replace the sealing ring at a later date if it was me I would just put the old ring back on if u think u need to change it u can always pick one up and replace it at a later date.

id have a look at the pump first, sometimes its a poor pump others it just needs cleaning, you can reuse sealing ring if its not damaged

Thanks guys. Would injector seals or washers cause my problem? Though iv read if it’s washers then car runs then dies? Mine pulls like a train up hill today, which is leading me to think pump area.

Quick update, had fuel pump out looked relatively clean so I think it may have been replaced at some point, couldn’t see any Land Rover branding on it and it was clean and bright white, definitely didn’t look like a 15year old pump, anyway cleaned screens both only had a tiny bit of muck on them, put fuel in and up to half a tank but still same noise, car still fires fine using my method of either cranking after glowplug light goes out or waiting until fuel pump finishes it’s noise.

Maybe the fault is elsewhere between the pump and the motor?
**** in the filter/water trap or even the pipes?
There was someone on this forum earlier with a problem and that is what the cause was.

worth changing the air bleed valve and did you check the orange rubber one way valve at bottom of the pump canister
also put a container under the filter remove the filter plug or switch and switch ignition on,you should get a decent pumped flow from the filter if you dont replace pump

Is the air bleed valve the one located in a pipe on the filter head? Orange valve in pump seemed fine, no dirt, no damage, free to move etc. The filter test do you mean the water drain point base of filter unscrew that then ignition on? I do intend to change filter this coming week even though this one hasn’t done much only Maby 3-5000 miles but is a britpart one that came with a service kit from previous owner.

yes valve is rear outer, and yes remove drain screw and switch on and watch what flow is like

Ok just tried removing screw on filter, no water, turned to position 2 on key, fuel was pouring out so don’t think pump has a issue probably got 250ml in the jug (some ended up on drive) in space of 5-10 seconds. However at the beginning it looked to be airated unless it was because the screw was still in just by couple of threads and fuel moving fast.
