Fuel Line Problems

Can anybody suggest why my defender 90 apparently runs out of fuel when there is still a good quarter of a tank left? It's not a sender or gauge problem, I've checked the downpipe on the fuel feed in the tank, replaced the fuel filter and lift pump and I can't find any leaks anywhere. It runs fine when the tank is full but it is a pain keep topping up!!! The running out of fuel symptom is juddering to a stop with air in the top of the fuel filter. 5l of fuel from a can and qickly bleeding using the manual lift and I'm away to the garage to fill up. This has happened 4 times now ad I don't like it much.

have you bled the fuel thru the fuel filter?

Yes I have bled the filter everytime it has happened. It's a 200tdi engine.
