Hi men (and women) of knowledge!

Diesel 110 pick up

I'm experiencing some troubles with my fuel gauge. the reading was at 3/4 of a tank and over a couple of days it gradually went down to 1/2 a tank as i would have expected. Then I have to admit i started to think wow this 200tdi really is efficient (suspicious!), I was driving along the duel carriage way and suddenly i the fuel warning light came on and the gauge was reading halfway in the red! I put £30 squid in and watched the gauge, but it didn't adjust!?. I went over a speed bump and the gauge went up to 3/4 of a tank.....

>surely if the low reading was correct 30 squid wouldnt equate to 3/4 of a tank?

>There is a slight leak on the refueling hose, could this present a problem if the fuel gauge works on pressure? if theres a leak the tank would be at atmospheric pressure. Oh the hose is connected with a jubilee clip the hose is a female connection facing downwards onto the tank, is that standard or good practice? I'll look into the leak just wondered whether is could be linked? As a plumber I should be able to cope with that!

>The tank is new by the looks of it. It got some kind of nipple on the right hand side of the tank when looking ubnder the refueling side.

>tried tapping the actual gauge on the dash: seems to have no effect.
>speed bump incident seemed to jolt the rear end.
>swerving again today altered the reading from 1/2 a tank to half way in the red and light on

Please help or advise me where to start!

The fuel sender unit is on it's way out Mine does the same sometimes. In fact it did it on Saturday whilst out laning. Halfway throught the day I realised I still had the same amount of fuel I'd put in it when we set off 40 odd miles previously.

And I ran out in Sidmouth once cos of the same problem.

ahhh, I'll check the manual to see whether thats a straightforward job. :)

any thoughts on the female hose connection facing downwards?

Its currently got one massive jubilee clip on it

I'm assuming you mean the filler Hose? If so that's std LR fitment. Tank isn't pressurised Quite the reverse, in fact. Checking sender unit is a simple job usually 5 screws or a bayonet type fitting depending on year IIRC

The sender sticks and the jolt of going over a speed bump will have loosened it. hence why tapping gauge has no effect

ok, i'll remove and inspect the sender unit, not too sure what to look for but i'll try to check the obvious.

not an expert by an means of the word but i had a similar problem a while back when i replaced the fuel tank on my 2.5 petrol so might be able to help a little. (presume its the same tank as a 200tdi??) if you lift the drivers seat you will see the sender and lift pump attached through the top of the tank, sender on the left, works kinda like a ball cock. mine was turned the wrong way and was hitting off the side if the tank and giving a bad reading, could be the same prob with yours if its possibly a new tank like you say?
