Hi !

I have a problem with the fuel gauge. The meter reads full when empty. Would anyone know how this can happen ? It works perfectly only that it reads the opposite.

I have heard that the cables can be switched ? Can this be an option and is it dangerous ? Please let me know. All help is appreciated! Don't know how this can happen...

I've just had a quick look at the wiring diagram and it doesn't look like the wires could be accidentally switched over.

Have you had the instrument binnacle, or dashboard off the vehicle?

It looks like the guage is driven from the car's computer, along with most of the other guages, so...... I'm at a loss here ::(

Hi,

It may not be the actual gauge itself where the problem is - try the other end of the line - it's much easier to access, and more reason for someone to have been there in the past.

The fuel gauge sender unit is accessed from an inspection plate under the carpet once you have folded the rear seats forward.

Have a look there - the connections are simply two spade terminals.

Its possible that someone has connected them the wrong way round when changing or repairing the sender. They possibly did not notice until after they had put everything back, and then couldn't be a*sed correcting it.

Good luck.

I had exactly the same, tried a 2nd hand instrument pack, but still the same. Tried another pump/sender unit, still the same.

In the end, I replaced the wire between the instrument pack and sender unit, which cured it :)

So exactly where can I find this. From what I saw I opened the gauge unit under the plate. And the connections goes fro mthe multi plug and the further, but I havent folioed it ... ?

Should I see somewhere else and try to change these connectors ? Where do I find this ?

Hmm I don't know. Is it alle connected from under the plate with cables to the dashboard? Nothing in-between ?
Please give me suggestions on what I can try

Nope, fold the seats forward, and lift the carpet. 6 screws to remove the plate.

Remove the instrument pack upper cover, and instrument pack itself.

Locate the wire you need (wiring diagrams on Freelander - Fix problems, repairs, diagrams, whats wrong, faults, upgrates - Land Rover )

Cut at both ends, and join in a new piece of wire, feed it down the back of the dash, and tuck it under the sill trims so its out of sight, and secure with cable ties etc

Simples

Hi guys, I too have a problem with my freelander,V6 petrol...kindly help me understanding something. It couldn't maintain idling, would lose power when ascending and would go off after driving constantly for miles then start after about 5min...so I thought of checking the pump first, cleaned fuel tank, washed the strainer and fixed the pump back and refilled...the pump is now ok. (1)Problem is the car can't easily start, it's behaving like tank is empty. (2) Why do I remain with 10lt fuel I can't use when the guage says empty?

Did you replace the fuel filter? They are known to clog, which prevents the fuel getting to the engine.

The pre face-lift and post face lift have senders that work the opposite way round. Maybe yours has been fitted with wrong one!!??

does the sender unit change resistance with more/less fuel?
Are you able to check, and does anyone have expected values from a good unit?

found this for checking sender unit http://www.myfreelander.co.uk/Electrical/elecprobs7.htm
Thanks J_D I've got the idea, let me see how I'll go about it, problem next weekend when I have enough time - in my locality few have an understanding of Landrover, freelander in this case, so I prefer I checking it on my own...just not cool this week I've to walk to work place. Lol

No I didn't, thanks Nodge68- Let me work on it and I'll get back...just kindly help me locate it.

The fuel filter is part of the pump assembly, in the tank. If the filter clogs up, then the pump simply recycles the fuel, preventing proper fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

Thanks a lot Nodge68, I'm really getting to understand my freelander. I guess you are a genius. I'll call again...Lol

Not a genius at all. I just know the Freelander pretty well. ;)
Just to check.
You are having fuel pressure problems, not fuel level problems?
