Disco 1 Front prop bearing.

Please excuse my lack of technical knowledge.

Is there a bearing on the front of the transfer box to the prop? A friends 300tdi is making a metal on metal sound and previous owner has covered this area in silicone?

Also the use of silicone suggests the oil seal is faulty also.
