Series 2 Front Disc Brake Conversion

Hi guys
Not saying we are going to do it but just need to know is it worth fitting a front brake disc conversion on a 200tdi S11a ( new rolling chassis )

I cant remember the numbers, but make sure youre not going to go over the limit with the tax exemption thing...

Yeah I will look into that but just wanted peeps thoughts on doing it or if anyone has done it was it worth doing

When I rebuilt a 2a 88 with rover V8 engine back in early seventies I used the 1 ton 109 drum brake parts on front with servo , it was more than adequate ( straight bolt on , same for rear 11 inch sls at rear)

Bolt on disk kits wont affect points .....

As for is it worth it ??? depends ...

Lots of towing/hill work/lack of arsedness in keeping drums adjusted correctly/driving like you stole it ... then possibly ...

Drive sensibly (even with full fat Tdi power) and keep drums in good order (especially 11" TLS flavour) and drums are perfectly capable of locking the wheels ...or should be .

Spoke with a bloke who had done what I think he called the Zeus conversion? He wasn't overly impressed as the pedal needed such a hard shove that his Mrs would no longer drive it. He said it did stop well but too much pedal effort needed.

I've not driven a series with the single cylinder brakes so can't compare. All I can confirm is that my 1981 TLS arrangement is plenty powerful and never have felt I needed more stopping power. I have never towed though.

Mt 88 with 11" front drums and servo stopped very well indeed, the only times I found it lacking in the braking department was after wading in deep water. Discs have the advantage of drying out quickly and less tinkering. I had 35 years with series Landies and all stopped well if looked after.

20 years of on road driving series as everyday work vehicle and agree with divie that standard brakes in good nick were fine.

Yeah with my last S2a that I fully restored and fitted a 200tdi to I though that I would upgrade the front brakes by fitting 11" brakes on the front and I had nothing but trouble with them mainly good make wheel cylinders leaking every 5 mins I eventually swapped for BP ones and never had a problem after that.
The rear I am happy with I would probably stick to drums on the back but switch to discs on the front mainly for easiness to maintain as this one won't be used off road so will look pretty std

What are people doing about master cylinders and servos on the various disc brake conversions? I'm going to use disco axles and discs on my Series 2 but need to sort out pedal box with servo and disc master cylinder. The series ones won't work properly as they are meant for drums. The Defender one I have is so massive it won't fit under the bonnet and anyway the pedal is in the wrong place - seems to be too high.
